GGs;
As a few of you know (now you all do), we live next door to our son and
his family. The forced home schooling due to the China virus only takes
the boys, ages 9 and 7, 2-3 hours a day. That leaves them a lot of time to
get on their mom’s nerves. A couple of days ago I started them on a hand
tools-only project. I picked up - curbside - a couple of 1x6 S1s2e cedar
boards. We’re in a rural area with lots of trees so the bird houses they’re
making will be more than just ornaments. Plans are from the North American
Bluebird Society for an Eastern Bluebird nestbox. They’re using a handsaw,
carpenter’s square, eggbeater, brace & bits, hammer, nails and glue.
Oh, and I have an easel off to the side where their 4 year old sister
draws and paints.

Bird houses are a great project for GITs.

I encourage the Boy Scouts in our Troop, who are working on the Woodwork merit
badge, to build a birdhouse. The younger Scouts like to write welcome messages
to the birds on the back wall.

Charlie

My brother is a Bluebird appreciator. He built a house and had trouble with
House Wrens occupying it before the Bluebirds could each year. Found out that
Bluebirds will use a house very close to anoiher Buebird, but House Wrens will
not, so the solution is to fasten 2 of houses back-to-back. That way you get
either one Bluebird and one House Wren or 2 Buedirds, but never 2 House Wrens.
YMMV
