271009 Dan Beck <drumsandbacon@g...> 2020‑05‑26 Bridgeport Boy Scout Hatchet?
My father-in-law gave me what I believe is a Bridgeport Boy Scout hatchet.
However, it's lacking a BSA logo. I know Bridgeport Hardware Manufacturing
Co. of Bridgeport, CT, was founded in 1899, and added official Boy Scout
hatchets to their line up in 1934. They produced these hatchets, in one
variation or another, until 1969. Does anyone know if Bridgeport produced
Boy Scout hatchets *without *BSA logos? The google machine is not helping
me answer this question, so any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

juststamped it with BS when needed I have the very same axe with the BS on it

I went down there to take apicture and it turns out I sold that one - in about
the same shape as Dan’s. However I did find something interesting in the axe
assortment. Scroll to the right:

Hollow aluminum with the steel bit cast into it. THe gasketted plug on the
bottom gives you a water proof place to store your weed

That’s the Air Force survival hatchet, Aluminum to keep it light, fill it
with sand or water after you crash to make it workable.

Kirk in HMB, where the crazies came out to play this weekend.

Wj\hen I got it 15 years ago I looked it up and found pictures of the casting
process and what the steel bit looks like. They never mentioned the military but
that sounds perfect. I guess the gasket on the handle plug is to keep the water
inside.

Thanks

That's what I was thinking, Ed. I can't imagine a company making an item as
popular as an ax or hatchet and only selling the branded version. But, I
wanted to make sure I didn't have a slightly different hatchet that I was
confusing with the Boy Scout hatchet.

I don't plan on selling it, as it has sentimental value and I'm more than
happy to put it use, but does anyone know the approx. value of such a
hatchet?

Hmm, Looks like I embellished the story a bit before I found the facts.

I swore we discussed it here, but I can't find it in the archives. And
other places I may have posted about it don't have archives.

Mine is just lowly German marked.  I cleaned it up some and put
pretty zebra scales on it.
Having camped with it up in the wilderness though, no way I would
trade it!

It might seem pretty ordinary on the shop wall. But when it comes time
you need it?
  Its a wonderful little ax!
Doesn't weigh so much to pack and man are you ever glad you brought it.

271026 Mike Rock <mikerock@m...> 2020‑05‑27 Re: Bridgeport Boy Scout Hatchet?
I have a casting question.  On these axes, is there any sign of chaplets
on the blade end or elsewhere.  Chaplets are little single or double
headed nail like gizmos that are put into the sand first support the
core, then to prevent core float after pouring.
That is assuming  this bad boy was sand cast of course.
You will see a little steel spot, maybe a 3/32" diameter spot, both on
top and bottom of the casting.  It will probably be just a tiny rust
spot but nice and round.

God bless
271028 Ed Minch <ruby1638@a...> 2020‑05‑27 Re: Bridgeport Boy Scout Hatchet?
Nothing like what you describe. The interior finish when you look inot the
hollow handle looks rough like there was sand next it. Do they make fores out
sand?
