270174 Ken Wright <wizard@b...> 2020‑03‑23 WTB: 18" or longer back saw
GGG's,
When my family and I moved here from Michigan some years ago, I think
the saw that came with my miter box (an 80's vintage Craftsman) failed
to make the move.  I went to the Borg and bought a "miter saw" but it's
only 14" and just not long enough to get a decent stroke in the box.  If
any Galoots have one they can part with, I'd be willing to pay a fair
price for it.

Hey Ken,

I am also in Michigan (Houghton, in da U.P.)

I have a couple of nice Craftsman mitre saws in my stash. On your mitre box,
measure the distance between the bottom of the saw guides and the bed to
determine the ideal height of the saw plate. I'll then measure up my saws to see
if there is a good match.

Ken,

Since Sears subcontracts Craftsman brand tools, publishing the Sears model
number will let the Porch identify the OEM and possibly turn up an exact
replacement saw!

The first digits, before the dot or space, of a Sears model number are a code
for the actual manufacturer.

Here’s a link to a table of Sears manufacturer codes for tools:

http://vintagemachinery.org/Craftsman/manufacturers.aspx

Then we’ll tackle the question of who made the saws furnished with that
manufacturer’s mitre boxes...

So, let us know the Sears model number, please.

Ken,

I have a 25" back saw that is available. It's newer. Great Neck, I
believe. Somebody coated it with linseed oil but that will come of
easily.

Would the color scheme help anybody identify this? I have a Craftsman
miter box that is red and gray that I am sure was made by Millers Falls,
since I had a Millers box in the same exact configuration. Don't know if
that would help your situation, but thought it might be a useful data point.

Close, very close.  The yellow parts on your box are red on mine, and

My miter box is mostly black, with a few red parts.  Like Matt Cooper's,
it has short legs holding it above the benchtop, with "Craftsman" cast
into the horizontal surface.  I hope that helps someone.

Sometime, in the late 70s to early 80s, I bought a Craftsman miter box and saw
that looked a lot like that. Mine is gray and red with an arch on the backstop.
The part number on the miter box owners manual is 881.36305. The 4 X 22"
Kromedge back saw has a part number, in the repair parts list, as 36188 with no
prefix. Presumably, the prefix is also 881.

Hope this helps.

On the Vintage Machines list of Sears contractors, 881 is the code for
Hempe.  Even though I can't find a model number on my miter box, I'm
willing to go with the provisional identification as a Hempe.

Does anyone have any info about Hempe?  I had never heard of them until
today.

881 indicates it was built by Hempe, for Sears. Here is someone's page about
theirs.

If so it was made by Hempe.

How about a picture of the mitre box in question?
I just sold my sears craftsman with a Krome edge saw.
I purchased a new to me Stanley.

Well, I took a good long look, and I couldn't see any model numbers on
the miter box. Sorry I can't provide more info.

In it, the author says

One last word of wisdom, Miter saws 22 to 30 in in length are NOT to be used
free hands, they are only made to be used in a proper miter box, or they will
bend. DO NOT do that, ever!

I have used a 24” for cutting tenons because I read that it makes it easier to
hold the saw vertical for a plumb cut. Worked niecely, pretty controllable, but
I likes my 14” better. Anybody know about this?

When I got to play with various Wenzloff saws, I found the bigger ones to
be too big to handle comfortably.

I ended up with a 14", 3" usable. The 16" was too top heavy with the brass
back. I can't imagine using either of my mitre saw (28" & 26") free hand.
