OK, mild steel it is. I’m excited about this – it won’t be as nice as Ed’s but I’ll be using the post drill for its first duty since I got it. Photos will be taken! Cheers, and thanks for the advice! |

Adrian, Mine is a piece of old lawn mower blade. Works just fine and has for years. You're driving wood that's fairly closely sized through it so it isn't under a lot of stress if the support below it is fairly close to the edges of the hole. HTH, Dave in Fairfax |

Although Dave, I have driven square pieces through first at a large size, then the right size. Go for very straight grain and put a block of wood over the top when you hit the blank. Split is best, and it is fun to use a chisel as a froe for smaller square blanks. Ed Minch |

Dave, Great idea! I think I have some lawn mower blades under a table in the woodshop - I will have a look. Meantime, I went ahead and ordered some mild steel from Amazon: Bullseye Metals 3/8 .375 Steel Plate 4" x 8" x 3/8 Flat Bar Mild Steel Cheers! -----Original Message----- From: OldTools [mailto:oldtools-bounces@s...] On Behalf Of Dave leader Sent: Saturday, February 8, 2020 4:36 PM To: Old Tools List Subject: Re: [OldTools] Making a dowel plate Adrian Jones wrote: > Hi folks, What sort of steel should I get?
