269675 "red735i@v..." <red735il@g...> 2020‑01‑15 Need a favor... Veritas Brass Dogs
I need to know the specific diameter of the Veritas ( Lee Valley) brass dogs.
I asked LV, and was told .750. I do not believe a .750 piece of brass will fit
n a .750 hole in wood what with raw hole walls, rouoghness, and humidity, etc….
And I remembered the diameter being .740, which sounds right to me…..

Could someone please take one out and measure it for me? I am not at home to
measure for myself….
Thanks

O.738" but that was measured with my thicknesser calipers that do not read
Starrett on the side.

Thanks Paul…. I remembered .740 was the LV spec, but their latest catalog
incarnation leaves this ( and a lot of other stuff) out…..

I have 4. They all mic’ed at .741. They can be pretty snug in a 3/4 hole
depending on humidity. Mine are about 10 years old so thing may have changed.

Cheers,
Kevin

.725 is the diameter and the hole is .750. I just measured mine for you.

GG’s:

We now have, what, four different diameters for Veritas brass dogs? Presumably,
they are different production runs.

It’s time for a Type Study!

If I’m doing the calculation correctly, 19mm brass rod would be 0.748...perhaps
some of them are made from rod made to a metric nominal diameter.

I sense a basis for acquiring a more precise set of calipers. Might already
have one in the drawer ... now what drawer was that again?

I just remeasured mine with a good dial caliper and I come up with .738.
My first measurement was with a regular vernier caliper and I guess it
was a poor read, my vision not what it used to be. I wonder why?

I just measured mine again with a good dial caliper and came up with
.738. The other time I used a vernier caliper and I guess I didn't read
it right. Eyes aren't what they used to be, I wonder why?

Mine are only about 2 years old so fairly recent made. They fit a 3/4'
hole real nice.

Boy - they are coming in at different dimensions. Mine are .735 and .740, and
the 2 aluminum “pups” are .730 and .725

Just measured mine with my non-professional grade dial caliper: .745. I would
guess they are at least 15 years old, I bought them second hand.

I just got "official" word from Lee Valley..... The dogs are speced at
0.740 +/- .002 inches.

I guess my memory is not so bad after all.....
