269210 Darrell & Kathy <larchmont@s...> 2019‑09‑18 Sunday Project
Galoots

Every winter we end up with a veritable avalanche, not of
snow, but of cold weather gear.  Hats, mitts, gloves, scarves,
earmuffs.  And since there are four of us and everyone has
some of each, it gets a bit unmanageable at times.

So, to help sort out the mess, I set to work in the shop on
the sunday past, to make a stack of cubbyholes to contain
all this stuff.  It started as some home centre pine 1X10's.

The case is dovetailed.  I used my R. H. Smith "successors to
J. Flint" dovetail saw for this, plus a small paring chisel.  The
saw was a $2 garage sale find from years ago, dull, rusty, and
covered in blue paint when I got it.  I stripped the paint, filled
the hang hole in the handle, scraped off the rust, and sharpened
it.  It's my go-to saw now.  The chisel I picked up at the Tools
of The Trade sale a long time back.  It cost me like $18 IIRC.
But it is the equal of the best new chisel you can find at $200.
Less then 1/16 inch thick, flexible, and with about a 15 degree
bevel, oh yes it cuts nice, even in mushy old pine.

The shelf dados were cut with a nice old woodie, which
needed only minor fettling.  I used a batten tacked onto
the side board, which was a fairly common practice in the
old days.

The dry-fit looks good, but glue-up will wait for an opportunity
when SWMBO can assist with the multiple pieces all at once.

Time to clear the bench and start on a new project.
Darrell

PS Galoot XMAS BBQ will be Dec 14th.

Don’t you just love a dado plane in pine?!

Takes no time at all to cut dados!

Great fun! Nice Sunday project

Looks great, Darrell!

Have you decided on a finish? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on
how you picked it. ( Water-resistance, co-ordination with other furniture, etc.)

BTW: I counted 16 spokeshaves and scratch stocks hanging on your wall. I guess
you “sort of collect” them. ( TM Todd Hughes )

I don't see any spokeshave problem. Could use a few more, maybe. I
don't see any of them with the elegant divided handles that give such
nice leverage and control.

And come to think of it, I don't see any woodies there either.

It did seem there was room on the rack for a few more. Loop-handles maybe? And a
shelf for the woodies. No hangy-holes!

IIRC at an early galoot BBQ (before they moved??) he explained that he
needs a bunch of them to teach batches of Scouts how to carve canoe
paddles....

4 people and 10 cubbies looks like room for one guest when the (now
adult) Kidz are both home...

Thanks for setting me straight, Esther!

I had forgotten his teaching youngsters.  I was actually just tossing a
gentle gibe at Darrell and recalling the "Daddy's got a saw problem"
from posts of yore.

And, I forgot to compliment Darrell on such a great outcome for a Sunday
afternoon project.  Sorry for such bad manners.

Hi John,

Oh, it will get shellac as a finish at the very least.
If Kathy wants to paint it too, then it will be her choice of colour.

The picture probably doesn't show it, but many of those pegs
have TWO spokeshaves on them.  And the wooden ones are
located elsewhere.  I have a weakness, dontcha know...
