269172 Kirk Eppler 2019‑09‑09 Fixing the problem of tools that smell like barf.
Galoots

I’m sure you’ve all been through that heartbreak of buying a nice looking
plastic handled screwdriver or chisel, and then get it home and after a
few weeks realize the drawer it’s in smells like barf. I may have found a
solution in our age old source, Shellac.

I have had a few Craftsman chisels and screwdrivers of a certain era that
have given me this problem, and I had tried many cleaning schemes, storage
on baking soda, etc, to no avail.

One website (and I have no idea which one anymore) suggested shellac but
no one ever reported back to say it worked. Well, after 2 weeks, I am
relieved to say I definitely see progress. I’ve done 6 or 7 now, using
hardware store clear dewaxed shellac, and none of them seems to be
releasing odors anymore. Most have been back in the drawer since the
holiday, and no detectable odor so far. One coat was all it took.

day.
