268781 Kirk Eppler 2019‑07‑01 Unique one that got away.
All

While perusing an auction site that promised old tools, which was mostly
wrenches, I saw one lone plane in the catalog. The picture was a toe on
view, and a closeup of the plane missing a knob. Zoomed in, saw No 04
1/4. Intrigued, I looked at the listing, and saw it was labeled Wood Plane
04 1/4. Guessing Ohio, I saw a few listings, most saying it was rare, but
not giving much specs on it.

I put in a bid for a couple of dollars, and told myself I'd worry about it
later. The item closed late Sunday evening, so I knew I could do some
research before it closed.

About an hour before it ended, I fished out the Ohio catalog, found out it
was slightly longer than their 4, less than the 4-1/2. The width was
2-1/4", less than the 2-3/8" of the 4-1/2.

So, emboldened by what I now knew, I upped my bid to $25. Started thinking
longer, as it wound down to the last 15 minutes, I figured I'd go to $32,
knowing I was still on the hook for 10% buyers fee, $5 handling, plus
shipping costs.

Before it closed, it jumped up in the last 2 minutes to at least $45, and I
declined to go that high.

Did I make a mistake?

Unfortunately, I did win a $6 bid on a pair of spokeshaves, which won't be
a great deal anymore now that they will ship alone.

Kirk Eppler, in Half Moon Bay, CA who saw lots of rusty and trashed common
planes, sockets, and lots of power tools this weekend, none that followed
me home. But I did get to have breakfast with Bill Kasper and his lovely
wife Allie on Sunday.

Well, Kirk, let’s put it this way: You now have your very own NON-buyer’s
remorse story!

Has anyone else ever even SEEN one of these Ohio 04-1/4 planes, much less owned
one?

Rarity does not always make value, but this presumably has the Ohio tapered
iron, which makes it an above-average user, at least on special occasions.
