I got a score on heavy gauge stainless vent pipe one time, and it fit
my stove, so I took it years ago. It's good pipe, I'll never wear this
stuff out.
Anyway it has the most perfect temper rainbow I ever saw. Its so
exaggerated!!
So, right in the middle? The pure stainless steel look? That is what
you never want to see, lol.
That's steel that has been heated past any temper.
But if you go to the outsides of the rainbow? The place where it barely
starts? Right at the top of the screen and actually a little above?
Pretty close to plain steel looking, but some beginning hint of greasy
yellow?
That's what I shoot for when making a cutting tool. A knife or blade
for a tool.
Can barely see it at all.
If you can make it out clearly you went a little too far.
But its not a hanging matter. Its still a good edge.
Then you got your actual greasy yellow. Outdoor tools of a cutting
nature. Takes a good edge but not as good as it holds that edge. Good
wearing in other words. Machete.
Below that is darkening and heading towards purple.
Screwdriver tips and suchlike. Where edge is not the thing but
toughness is.
After that brown spots in hard purple.
Shovels and ground engagement tools where toughness in brutal use is
even more important that holding a shaving edge.
Last...... spring blue. All springs are this color unless they polish
it off after.
Anyway I thought it was a cool picture
yours Scott
