It’s beautiful. My grandad had one with a handle on, all made of wood, and you
whiled away the time just spinning the handle and watching it go around. It
said on the bottom “Round Tuit”.

What will you use it on?

Hey Ed,

Are you thinking of something like this?
http://billwebber.galootcentral.com/smoke.JPG

This was made 30 - 40 years ago. They were called variously smoke
grinders, BS machines, or do nothings. Perhaps round tuits as you suggest.

As for what will I use my ellipsograph on, I'll likely use it as a
coffee table decoration. I think drawing an ellipse with a couple nails
and a piece of string is much easier than setting up the fancy machine.

That’s the thing Bill - his was unfinished maple or other light wood that was
plenty dirty from hands spinning it, many of them mine.

268484 Bill Webber 2019‑05‑12 Re: Ellipsograph
Hey Nichel,

It's ellipses. I had not experimented with making videos. I figured
some doubting Thomas, or doubting Nichel, would challenge me for
pictures. Unlike planes, I didn't think folks would buy an ellipsograph
sitting on an oval as proof of functionality. A plane with a mouth full
of shavings is generally accepted as proof the planing tool works. (No
one has yet been caught stuffing shavings into the mouth of a plane.)

So I made a fifteen second test video. It took 5 - 10 minutes to upload
to galootcentral. The download took only a little less time. And then
the fifteen second video played back, in like, 15 seconds.

I think a decent video of my ellipsograph would run 5-minutes or more? I
don't believe Brian would take kindly to me sucking up so much bandwidth
from his server just to show I can draw an oval with this gadget. Since
the video is not likely to be available any time soon, if you send me
your address and a SASE, I'll send you an original oval or a facsimile
(depending on demand).

Thanks for your interest,
All in jest,
I am sincerely yours,

Hi Scott,

Not sure exactly what your question is. Slide blocks run in the mortice
in the wooden assembly. Posts with screws ride in the slide blocks.
The pencil bar is fixed in the posts.

There's a brief write-up here with more pictures.

This could be your chance to become a youtube star! They seem to take
any length video and don't care how many people watch it.

Bill, that is very fine work! It shall be appropriated some time in the future
:)

I believe the original ellipsograph in the Woodwright's video was made by George
Wilson, who was the senior tool maker and instrument maker at Williamsberg. He
has produced some extraordinary tools, guitars, violins, spinets, and other
items. I believe one was a commission to the Queen of England.

I hope this is not sidetracking the thread, but it may be of interest to know of
George Wilson, one of the lesser known artists of our time. Here he is at work

Yes, indeed.

And just in case anyone had any doubts, I never doubted for a moment that
it worked perfectly fine. I just meant that, as
a viewer, I kinda found it a little
disappointing to see something this pretty and then not get a chance to see
it in action (or, at least to see some of its results.)

Nichel,

I realized I had not posted the link to the Woodwright's video of their
use of the ellipsograph. Perhaps folks hadn't seen it. My ellipsograph
was made to be similar. Check the video starting at about 3 minutes, 30
seconds.

I wish I could remember more about it, but in the late '60s the art and
framing store where I worked had a hand cranked machine to cut oval
matts for photographs. You set the settings for the size of the matt,
and began cranking. Not only did it cut the precise oval needed, but
made that cut at a 45 degree angle, like any other matt. It was a real
mechanical marvel.

Wait a minute - if they were pressed into the sand the numbers would be
backwards in the sand, then if the mold were filled, the casting would have it
frontwards again. All is right with the world!

268637 Bill Webber 2019‑06‑04 Re: Letters / numbers for casting
Yeah, you are right of course. But the letters would protrude from the
casting, along with their nice oval background. Likely to be ground off
when the casting is finished to spec. But thanks for playing... :-)

Jim would know how to do this..
