Went to my grandkid’s Cub Scout dinner on Sunday and his best friend’s family
sat next to us. Turns out the dad is a PhD student at the University of DE in
material culture. He and 3 others, including his mentor, Dr. Garrison, just got
back from a 5 day session measuring and documenting this:

found-in-duxbury/8203153

He was all over the building and benches and fixtures, even in the crawlspace
under the building, and they noted some rotten plates, but most of the building
is OK.

In addition, they are applying for National Landmark status. I was able to send
him some links that would be helpful.

We spoke at length and he is not a woodworker so I was able to answer some
questions for him - and not answer some others. I just got an email from him
and he said he would like me to critique his application especially in the area
of various tasks that would have been done in different areas of the shop on
different benches.

I will be asking for some help when he writes - can I count on youse guys??

That is one town over from where Peter Follensbee lives. I hope he will be
involved.

He would be an excellent contact - thanks

Peter was involved with the finding of it. He was one of the first there. He
wrote about it back in 2012. https://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/2012/11/25/the-cats-out-of-the-bag-that-

fall/">https://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/2012/11/25/the-cats-out-of-the-bag-
that-old-joiners-shop-you-saw-here-this-fall/

I drive past it almost every Sunday as it is between church and my in laws
house. Hey what’s the difference between in laws and outlaws?

Outlaws are wanted!

Anyway, I would be available to help out somewhat.

By the way Peter is quite reachable, I believe his contact info is on his blog
page somewhere. I know him a bit and have been to his home a few times. He is a
great guy.

Of course! And I'm amazed that the DE crew didn't have a woodworker (and old
tool guy) with them. I hope you gave them a stern talking to and a request to be
called if/when they're invited back.

And now I'm trying to recall Peter's talk at the Williamsburg symposium that
included a little bit on this shop. I'm pretty sure he and the others involved
in the initial survey have a pretty good handle on what a lot of the shop was
used for, but other parts had some mysteries. Definitely get these two groups
talking!

And if they're considering treating this as an archaeological site: ps://www.nps.gov/nr/publications/bulletins/arch/pt4.htm">https://www.nps.gov/nr/
