I have a 3/8" drive socket extension about 4" long. The female end is a
standard square. The male end, unlike a normal extension, has a hex shape.

Anyone know what this was intended to attach to? I am guessing there are hex
shaped sockets out there that could be driven with this extension.

There are lots of hex head drivers to drive hex head fasteners - like these
for example -

and-sets?attrs=Bit+Style%7CHex&filters=attrs

I have a set that I use in my impact driver to free difficult fasteners.
Or am I missing something?

There used to be a lot of sets like this back in the day

I guess your piece would allow mixing the sets w modern? I think this is a
pre-1950s thing.

Couple of Herbrand catalogs here, might be in there w explanation, might be
too late

Jerry

Many early socket set were hex in the sockets and used a large allan
wrench to drive them. My dad's first set was like that. I think I still
have the allan wrench and box but the sockets went into the scrap metal
a long time ago.
