267058 RH <rhhutchins@h...> 2018‑11‑14 Router Plane Blades
I'm glad I got my Stanley 71 (or is 71-1/2?) some time back. Prices have
soared and replacement blades/cutters are very few and are priced like
hen's teeth.  My cutter is the pointed variety. I'd like to have a
single edge 1/2" blade but those I've seen on offer are priced too rich
for my blood.  I can get one from LV for ~$16 plus S&H.  Does anyone
know of a better source?  There's no way I'll pay twice as much for a
cutter as I paid for the plane with cutter.

LV is the only new source I know of. Old ones in the wild are getting
rarer. Found one, will need to see where I hid it.

Bob,

Personally, I think the LV blades are better than the Stanley originals. I feel
I can get a better edge on them than the Stanley's.

Unless you luck into a cheap Stanley one or really want to go original I think
the LV are the better choice.

GG

St James Bay used to have them. I just checked and they are showing a blade for
the little one, the 271, but not the 70-1/2 or 71. I have dropped them a line
and will let you know what the answer is when it comes

and here is their ebay store

I personally purchased the blades from Lee Valley and they are fantastic.
If you don't want to you could always make one out of an allen wrench.

I make my own. Start with an allen wrench. Grind and file to shape,
temper/quench, scary sharp, and good to go.

I use a plumbers torch for a heat source, and it takes about an hour start to
finish.

the advantage of using allen wrenches is that it makes it easy to make a blade
of a particular size (when you pick your wrench, make sure that the flats are
parallel to the bend in the wrench)..

this pretty amazing. I did a batch of planes like this for the galooterati back
in the late 90s. only difference was that I used an eye bolt instead of drilling
a thumbscrew. I still have a couple of them that I use on a regular basis...

GG’s:

St. James Bay Tool Co. makes replacement blades for many old Stanley planes and
other antique tools.

I’ve made several orders from them, and have been fully satisfied.

They also make infill planes and kits. Many galootish items!

And I still have mine, my first router plane, and still use it.

Thanks to all who responded to my query.  I ordered a 1/2" straight
blade from Lee Valley.  I also noted the other sources you told me about.

Yesterday I wrote to St James Bay and asked if they made blades for a full sized
Stanley router like the ones they make for the smaller 271. Today someone wrote
back and said “No I don’t”.

Scratch that one

nice! one of my dreams is to have one of my kids (who helped in that short
production run) find one of them in 20 or 30 years. Preferably, still; being
used.
