Recent Arrivals
Small Section Railroad Track Blacksmith Anvil. Measuring 6 1/16" long
across the top, 1 5/16" wide, and this weighs 3 lbs 6 oz unboxed. Not
signed as to the maker, this probably came out of one of the coal mines
around these here parts. This in reasonably good condition. The yellow
finish, was somebody else's idea of fun and I have no idea what it is.
I hit it with my usual paint stripper and Acetone and nothing happened.
My wire wheel just spun out on it and I finally got through it with some
heavy duty sanding (and you guys think that this job is SO easy!) The
face has some light patina, pitting and wear but nothing too deep. This
is what it is, but it is a handy size for doing small work on the bench.

Keen Kutter 3/4 Inch Socket Gouge. Measuring 9 3/16" from the edge to
the end of the socket, the blade is 6 1/2" long, 13/16" wide across the
outside at the edge tapering down to 11/16" at the socket so I'm calling
this a 3/4", this is 13 9/16" overall, and this weighs 7 1/4 oz unboxed.
This is in good condition and was cleaned. The back of the blade is
good with no problems. There is a little frosting on the inside of the
sweep. The edge is good but will need just a quick sharpening. The
socket is good other than a little staining. The handle is the original
one and is good other than a few small stains. I did not have that off
of the tool. This ain't 100% minty but it's pretty darn close. $23.00

Big Early Hand Forged PA Style 6 lb Felling Axe Head. Measuring 8" long
(from the top of the edge to the top of the poll), the edge is 4 5/8"
high (straight across), and this weighs 6 lbs 1/4 oz unboxed. Not
signed as to the maker. This is in decent condition and was cleaned,
mainly to get rid of some recent patina. This looks to have been dug up
some place. There is some deep pitting on the left side (looking from
the poll to the edge) and some lighter stuff on the right side. The
steel bit is visible on the right side and there is 2" (+/-) of steel
left. The edge is pitted and chipped but nothing too deep. I did run
file over a couple of small sharp spots of mushrooming on the poll but
that is fairly good all things considered. There is some crusty inside
the eye but that is good with no cracks. There is a visible fillet
piece at the front of the eye on the top. This ain't minty but this one
has some serious age to it and could well be 18th Century as to vintage
or pretty darn close. $70.00

J Colton 1 Inch Fully Boxed Side Bead Molding Plane. This weighs 1 lb
1/2 oz unboxed. John Colton was a Philadelphia PA plane maker who
worked from 1837 until 1876. This is the B mark which is rated 1 "*"
for rarity. The mark is very faint and the only thing I can make out is
the street address. This is in reasonably good condition and was
cleaned by someone else. Note this is straight, any bending you see is
because of camera lens distortion, although why folks would think that I
would sell a bent plane is beyond me. The body has some dings and
stains but nothing outside of normal wear. There is a little checking
at the heel. The sole and boxing are good other than a small chip off
the end of the boxing at the heel. The mouth is tight and was never
messed with. The iron is partially marked W Butcher. That has some
frosting and a few dots on the cutting face but it's clean for the most
part. That will need a sharpening. The wedge is good other than some
wear around the edge. This ain't pristine but these bigger side beads
are hard to come by especially if you are building a set of them. $28.00

Two Vintage Brass Founders Tools For Sand Casting Work. The one on the
left is 7 7/8" long (straight across), the faces are 7/8" wide, the one
on the right is 8 3/4" long, the long end is 13/16" wide, the tamper end
is 1" wide, and they weigh 8 oz unboxed. Not signed as to the maker.
These are in reasonably good condition and were cleaned. The working
faces are good. The tamper head is slightly bent to the one side but
that's the way that it was made because it doesn't want to bend back.

W Butcher 5/16 Inch Curved Carving Tool Gouge. Measuring 3 15/16" from
the edge to the top of the handle (straight across), the blade is 5/16"
wide across the outside of the sweep which looks to be a No. 17 (8),
this is 8 3/4" overall, and this weighs 2 1/2 oz unboxed. This is in
decent condition and was cleaned. There is some frosting on the inside
of the sweep. The back is good and this is sharpened to the back. The
edge will need a touch up. The handle is old and might be the original
one. That does have some checks under the ferrule and some wear to the
turning and on the end. The blade is in tight. This ain't minty but W
Butcher London pattern carving tools are very uncommon, I have only seen
5 or 6 in all the years that I have been doing this. $22.00

L S Starrett No 410 36 Inch Heavy Tempered Bench Rule. This is ruled in
No 4R graduations and weighs 1 lb 5 1/2 oz unboxed. This is in decent
condition and was cleaned. The front has some frosting and staining.
The back also has some frosting, staining, and few lightly pitted areas.
All the rulings are readable and the edges and corners are good. This
ain't minty but price a new Starrett bench rule in this size and this is

Two Vintage Craftsman Protractor Tools. The one on the left is a
combination depth gage and protractor with a 6" rule, the other one is a
No. 4029 stainless steel protractor, and they weigh 3 1/2 oz unboxed.
These are in used but reasonably good condition, the only cleaning was
to take a few spots of rust off of the depth gage. That is good, the
rulings (32nds and 64ths) are all readable and the working edge on the
head is crispy. The No. 4029 has some scuffs on the face and a few
light spots on the back. Both locking screws work just dandy. Say what
you want about Craftsman tools but these are quality USA made products
and will get the job done. $22.00

Cowles Hardware Co Turnscrew Or Screwdriver. Measuring 7 3/8" long, the
tip is 1 /4" wide, and this weighs 1 3/4 oz unboxed. The Cowles
Hardware Co was a Bridgeport CT hardware dealer and manufacturer who
became the Knapp & Cowles Mfg Co in 1890. This is in decent condition
and was cleaned. The blade is good other than some staining and a few
light dings on the edges. The tip has been dressed before but that is
good as well. The handle has some dings and stains but it's solid and
the blade is in tight. This ain't minty but it sure ain't bad
considering the age of the tool. $17.00

Wood Body Spokeshave Or Spokeshave. Measuring 11" overall, the blade is
3" long, 9/16" wide across the edge, and this weighs 4 oz unboxed.
Marked as shown, I don't know the maker but I have sold other shaves
with this mark. This is in reasonably good condition and was cleaned.
The body is beech. There are some stains and dings but nothing too bad.
The sole has some light wear at the front. The blade has some
frosting and a few dots but nothing too deep and there is lots to work
with. That will need a sharpening. The blade does remove and holds in

Bridgeport No 1103 Shotgun Shell Bench Closer Crimper. This weighs 12 oz
unboxed and is used with 12 gauge shotgun shells. This isn't signed but
the distinctive finish says it all. This is in good condition, I did a
little detailing on it but nothing much at all. The finish on the body
is close to perfect, the black finish on the lever arm has some wear.
The knobs are good finish wise. The bench clamp screw works well and
holds. This ain't 100% minty but it's pretty darn close. $30.00

Stanley SW Square Household Jack Plane. This is the same size as a No.
5 1/4 plane and weighs 3 lbs 10 3/4 oz unboxed. The Four Square line of
planes were made from 1923 until 1930, this one has the logo cap which
showed up around 1929. This is in decent condition and was cleaned.
Note this is straight, any bending you see is because of camera lens
distortion, although why folks would think that I would sell a bent
plane is beyond me. The sides have some frosting, dings and a few very
light spots of pitting. The sole also has some spots of light pitting
and scratches. The finish is original and close to perfect on the body
except for the tops of the sides. The lever cap is good ahd also has
almost all of the finish. The chipbreaker has some light pitting. The
blade has patina on the exposed areas and the back. The cutting face
has a band of light pitting down by the edge but nothing too deep. The
blade will need a sharpening. The brass blade adjuster knob is bent on
the one side and the knurling is worn, looks like somebody used a pair
of pliers to adjust the blade depth, but it does travel the full
distance. The tote and knob have the original finish plus a coat of
wax. The finish on the knob is worn and the tote also has some wear to
the finish but most of the decal is there and it is solid with no
cracks. The tote does not come off of the plane, the brass nut removes
but I can't pull the tote off of the threaded rod and well, I ain't
gonna risk breaking something trying to force it. All of the other
screws work and were oiled. This ain't pristine but being around the 90
year old mark, it sure ain't bad. $70.00

Four Vintage Long Founders Puller Tools For Sand Casting Work. These
range in length from 15 1/2" to 20 1/8", the blades range from 1/2" to
7/8" in width, and they weigh 15 1/2 oz unboxed. Most are signed.
These are in reasonably good condition and were cleaned. There are some
spots of light pitting, mainly on the insides of the blades but nothing
worth kicking the cat over. The edges on the blades and ends have some

Four Gimlet Tip Bits For A Brace or Bitstock. The upper one is a 5,
(these are in 32nds of a inch increments in cause you were asleep in
class that day in first grade), the next one is a 6, the next one is a
7, the bottom one is an 9, and they weigh 4 oz unboxed. All are in
decent but working condition and were cleaned, There is a little
patina on the shafts and up in the grooves but nothing too bad. The
edges have a few tiny dings but they feel good, but that doesn't mean
that they won't need a touch-up. None of these are notched for a
bitstock but that is easy enough to do. It sure ain't getting any easier

Very Early Hand Forged Slater Slate Roofing Hammer. Measuring 15"
overall, the head is 4 5/8" long, the face is 3/4" square (behind the
mushrooming), and this weighs 1 lb 9 1/2 oz unboxed. Not signed as to
the maker. This is in decent condition and was cleaned. There is lots
of patina overall. The face has some mushrooming and the spike is dull.
The breaking edge of the shaft is also dulled from use. The head is
on tight. This would have had a wood handle at some point but that is
long gone, the end of the tang has a little mushrooming where it was
peened over a rivet. This ain't pretty or perfect but it does have some

L S Starrett No 284 Machinist 29 Deg Acme Screw Thread Gage. This
weighs 2 oz unboxed. This is in decent condition and was cleaned. There
are some spots of frosting and light pitting along with lightly marked
user initials on the front. The back has some light spots as well. The
edges are crisp and all the notches are good. This ain't the prettiest
but a new one will set you back a few more $$ than I'm asking for this

Vintage No 2 Rein Trimmer. Measuring 5 5/8" long, 5/16" wide across the
outside of the tips, a little over 1/8" between the tips, and this
weighs 3/4 oz unboxed. Not signed as to the maker. This is in decent
condition and was cleaned. The blade has a few dots of patina on the
top and a few spots of light pitting on the back but the tips are good.
The edge feels sharp to the touch but that doesn't mean it won't need a
quick tune-up. The stained hardwood handle has a repaired check on the
one side and the blade won't be pulling out anytime soon. The rest of
the handle is good to go. This ain't perfect but these guys sure ain't
been showing up like they used to. $17.00

Two L S Starrett No 307 Machinist Rules. There is a 6", a 12", and they
weigh 3 1/4 oz unboxed. These are tempered and ruled in 100ths and
64ths on the fronts and 16ths and 32nds on the backs. These are in
decent condition overall and were cleaned. The 6" has some spots of
light pitting on the front and some light rust etching on the back. All
of the rulings readable, and the edges and corners aren't shaving shape,
but they ain't too bad. The 12" has a couple of light spots on the
front and some frosting on the back. All of the rulings on that are
good to go as are the edges and the corners. These ain't minty but they
are handy rules to have around and they do have some age to them, seeing
as how they aren't in my 1950's vintage Starrett 26A catalog. $22.00

Early Hand Forged PA Dutch Dough Scraper. Measuring 4" long across the
top, the blade is 2 15/16" high, 4 13/16" wide across the edge, and this
weighs 7 3/4 oz unboxed. Not signed as to the maker. This is in decent
condition overall and was cleaned. There is a little patina on both
sides of the blade and there is a small crack (about 5/16") in the
center at the edge. The edge has a very slight curve to it but that's
the way that it was made. The handle is solid and good. These wider
blade dough scrapers sure aren't very common to say the least. $30.00

Uncommon Stanley Rule & Level X-3 6 Inch Sweep Brace. This weighs 2 lbs
4 1/2 oz unboxed. Charles E. Mitchell of New Britain, CT was granted
Pat. No. 1,011,227 on Dec. 12, 1911 for the design of the chuck used on
this tool. This has the R & L mark on the chuck shell but it is worn.
This is in decent condition overall and was cleaned. The plating on the
frame is gone and there is some light patina. The chuck shell also is
missing most of the plating and there are a few spots of putting. The
chuck and the jaws are good. The ratchet is also good with no play to
speak of, and it works in both directions and the locked position. The
grip and pad are hardwood that was painted black at the factory. That
was worn and they were repainted, that's not a perfect job but they are
better than they were. There are some dings and wear on both of them,
but they spin freely. These were originally made for the US Army
Ordnance and few have survived the journey without a bunch of patina and
well if you do want a minty one, bring a whole lot more money. Just

overall, the head is 2 5/16" long, the face is 7/16" in diameter, the
peen is a little under 7/16" wide, and this weighs 2 oz unboxed. Not
signed as to the maker. This is in decent condition overall and was
cleaned. The head has some frosting and light pitting. The face has
some light dings and wear and a whisker of mushrooming around the edge.
The peen is good other that a little mushrooming on the underside. The
oval style handle is the original one. That has a check under the eye,
some dings there as well, and some stains and wear. I did reseat the
wedge and the head is on tight setting here. This ain't perfect but it

Two Vintage Drafting Rules. The upper one is a Keuffel & Esser No.
8881, the lower one is a Dietzgen No. 31636, and they weigh 3 1/4 oz
unboxed. These are in used but good condition. I did give the K & E a
wipedown with some wax. These are straight, the edges are free of
dings, and all the rulings are readable. The K & E does have a user
name ink marked on the side but that could be removed. These ain't
minty but they sure ain't bad and I haven't been seeing too many of

J Stortz & Son Hand Forged Ice Axe Head. Measuring 10 13/16" long
(across the center), the edge is 2 9/16" high (straight across), and
this weighs 3 lbs 5 oz unboxed. The mark is a bit faint but it can be
read. This is in decent condition overall and was cleaned. Overall
there is some light patina but nothing out of the ordinary. The edge
isn't shaving sharp but it's not too bad. The poll on the other hand
has some major dings, mushrooming, a couple of checks. I did zing down
a couple of sharp edges there. The eye is has some crusty inside and I
ran a file over some mushrooming on the insides of the wings. You can
see the forge weld lines on the top of the eye where the filler piece
was put in but it's not cracked there. The bottom line is that this guy
ain't minty but ice axes by this maker are very uncommon, at least in my
travels. $32.00

Hand Forged Early Stone Brick Mason Pointing Tool. Measuring 10 3/4"
long, the one blade is 3/4" long, 3/16" wide, the other is 3/4" long,
1/8" wide, and this weighs 1 lb 3 1/2 oz unboxed. Not signed as to the
maker, there is the number 16 stamped on the center of the one side.
This is in reasonably good condition for the age and use and was
cleaned. There is some overall light patina but nothing worth kicking
the cat over. Both of the edges are good other than some light wear.

Stanley SW No 72 Marking & Mortise Gage. This weighs 4 1/2 oz unboxed.
This is in reasonably good condition and was lightly cleaned. There is
some staining on the one side of the beams but they are straight. There
are also some light dings on the edges. The points are good. The head
also has some light stains but no wear on the faces. The screws have a
few tiny dings on the edges but the threads are good and hold. This
ain't 100% minty but these guys are rarely in anything close to this
condition. $20.00

Hand Forged Early Blacksmith Square Hole Drift Punch Head. Measuring 6
1/4" long, the tip is roughly 1/2" square, 1 1/16" by 15/16" right in
front of the eye, and this weighs 1 lb 6 oz unboxed. Not signed as to
the maker. This is used to be non-round holes. This is in well used
condition and was cleaned. There is lots of patina going on. The tip
has a little mushrooming and there is a cut mark on the one side up by
the eye but it's not cracked. The striking end has a bunch of funky
going, including mushrooming, chipping, and a few voids. I did zing
down a few sharp edges there but it's too hot here to mount a full scale
cleanup. The punched eye is good other than a little crusty inside.
This ain't pretty or perfect and it sure ain't got the price tag of one
in better condition and these guys don't show up very often to say the
least. $17.00

Vintage Cast Iron Chair Makers Spoke Pointer. The bell is 2 3/16" in
diameter and this weighs 6 1/4 oz unboxed. Not signed as to the maker.
This is in decent condition overall and was cleaned. The finish is worn
but some of it is there. The inside of the bell has a little patina.
The blade is clean other than a little frosting and there is a fair
amount to work with. That will need a quick sharpening. The screw works
and was oiled and the tang is good as well. This ain't pristine but it
will get the job done. $25.00

Tyzack Turner No 660 Talisman 24 Inch 7 PT Cross Cut Saw. This weighs 1
lb 9 oz unboxed. This is NOS, that's New Old Stock, and was not
cleaned. There ain't nothing at all to fuss about with this guy. The
blade is shiny and sharp. There is a little bit of the protective
coating showing at the toe. The tote and saw nuts are as good as they
get. This is a quality tool made by an well respected English saw maker
and I have been selling and shipping saws now for over 24 years so I

Saw. Measuring 12 13/16" overall, the blade is 8" long, 1 9/16" high
(from the teeth to the start of the back), this is sharpened to 15 PT
(14 TPI) CC, and this weighs 5 1/4 oz unboxed. This is NOS (that's New
Old Stock) and was not cleaned. There is nothing to fuss about at all
other than a few very light scuffs to the finish on the blade. This is
factory sharp and straight and they don't get any better than this. $24.00

Tyzack Sons & Turner No 131 8 Inch Gentleman's Steel Back Dovetail Saw.
Measuring 12 13/16" overall, the blade is 8" long, 1 9/16" high (from
the teeth to the start of the back), this is sharpened to 15 PT (14 TPI)
CC, and this weighs 5 1/4 oz unboxed. This is NOS (that's New Old Stock)
and was not cleaned. There is nothing to fuss about at all other than a
little bit of extra protective finish on the front of the blade. The
brass ferrule has a check on the underside but it's pinned to the handle
alng with the blade. This is factory sharp and straight and they don't
get any better than this. A quality English wood working saw for sure!

Sandvik No 271-9T 26 Inch 10 PT Cross Cut Saw. This is sharpened to 9
TPI or 10 PT cross cut and this weighs 1 lb 10 oz unboxed. This is NOS,
that's New Old Stock, and was not cleaned. There are a few scratches on
the blade from being handled over the years (these weren't stored very
well) but nothing too bad. The dragon handle is good other than a
couple of small stains. This is a quality saw and I've been selling and

Other New Old Stock Tools
Four Yankee No 30 130 Screwdriver Bits. Left to right there is a 1/4"
Phillips, a 5/16" Phillips, a 3/16" straight, a 1/4" straight, and they
weigh 3 1/2 oz unboxed. The straight bits are signed and the Phillips
are not maker marked. These will fit the Yankee and Stanley No. 30 and
131 push screwdrivers along with the A models. These are NOS (that's
New Old Stock) but they were lying around in a barn for the past 35 or
so years and I did do some cleaning on them. The Phillips have a few
small spots of staining and the 1/4" straight does have a few spots of
light rust etching (and that was still on the card!). But the tips and
tang ends are all good to go. This is a good working set of these guys
for the price. Note: I do have more than one set of these so they might
vary a little from the pictures. $18.00

Rabone Chesterman 10 Inch Sweep Brace. This weighs 2 lbs 12 1/4 oz
unboxed. The Rabone and Chesterman companies merged in 1963 and were in
business until 1989 when Stanley bought the firm. This is NOS, that's
New Old Stock, and was not cleaned. There is a touch of patina there
and there from setting around but nothing too bad. The grip and pad are
plastic and they have a few dings. The ratchet and jaws are good,
although it could stand a touch of oil. This ain't the fanciest but
this is a good heavy duty brace. Note: I also have an 8" sweep one
available at the same price. $24.00

Fine Products England Tool Chisel Roll With 8 Pockets. Measuring 19
3/4" long, 14 3/8" high, the pockets vary in width from 1 1/2" to 2 1/2"
wide, and this weighs 9 oz unboxed. Made by the H. L. Fine and Son Ltd
company of Middlesex England. This is NOS, that's New Old Stock. This
was never out of the package until I took it out to take the pretty
pictures. Canvas on the outside and some kind of felting on the inside.

Two Cabinetmakers Shave Hooks Or Shavehooks. These are 7 5/16" long,
the triangle blade is 2 7/16" across the edges, the other one is 2 3/8"
high, 1 3/4" wide, and they weigh 9 3/4 oz unboxed. Not signed as to
the maker, but I know for a fact that these came over from England in
the 1980's. These are NOS, that's New Old Stock. But they have been
bouncing around boxes for a while. I did clean some light patina off of
the shafts and a few small spots on the blades. The edges had a few
light dings that I fixed with some file work. The handle finish is good
on both. These are quality and handy tools. $15.00

The Best Of The Rest
Two Karpenter Mortising Chisels. The upper one is a 1/4" measuring 10
5/8" from the edge to the end of the socket, the blade is 8" long, this
is 15 5/8" overall, the lower one is a 1/2" measuring 10 15/16" from the
edge to the end of the socket, the blade is 8" long, this is 15 1/2"
overall, and they weigh 1 lb 2 oz unboxed. Karpenter was a brand name
used by the Winsted Edge Tool Company best known for the T H Witherby
brand of tools. Look it up. These are in reasonably good condition and
were cleaned. Note these are straight, any bending you see is because
of camera lens distortion. The back of the 1/4" has some light frosting
and a few spots of light pitting down by the socket but nothing too bad.
The back of the 1/2" is good save for a few very light dots. The
sides and tops of both have some small spots of patina. Both of the
edges do have chips and will need a good sharpening. The sockets have
some light pitting. The handles are the original ones. They have some
staining but are good to go. These ain't perfect but they are quality
tools with a lot of life left in them. $55.00

Buck Bros 1/2 Inch Carving Tool Chisel. Measuring 4 15/16" from the
edge to the top of the handle, the blade is 3 5/8" long, this is 9 5/16"
overall, and this weighs 2 3/4 oz unboxed. This is in used but good
condition and was not cleaned. The machined front of the blade has some
coloration from being heat treated at the factory but nothing bad patina
wise. This is sharpened to a knife edge and that is good and sharp.
The back of the blade was never finished off pretty to start with. The
handle is good and has all of the original finish plus a coat of wax.
All in all this is a good tool that is ready to work. $17.00

P S & W No 1 Ex Round Top 1/2 Inch Timberframer Mortising Chisel.
Measuring 11 9/16" from the edge to the end of the socket, the blade is
8 5/16" long, the steel bit is 6 1/2" long, this is 16 3/8" overall, and
this weighs 13 1/2 oz unboxed. This is in good condition overall, it
was cleaned but it wasn't too bad to start with. The steel cutting bit
has one spot of pitting at the edge, some spots of light frosting also
up there, and a few stains and dots running the rest of the way but it's
clean for the most part. The edge is good and sharp. The rest of the
blade is good as well. The socket has a few spots of light pitting but
was never struck. The handle is the original one and has most of the
original finish. There is some staining and a few dings but it's solid.
I gotta say that these guys are sure getting few and far between,
especially in this length and condition. $35.00

Carborundum No 183 Slip Sharpening Stone & Box. Measuring 4 1/2" long,
1 3/4" high, 1/2" wide across the thicker end, 3/16" across the narrow
end, and this all weighs 3 3/4 oz unboxed. This is a Fine stone
according to the end panel on the box. This is in good condition
overall and was not cleaned. There are a few light scuffs on the sides
but nothing too bad. The edges are good other than a little red
staining from the box. The box lid has a ripped corner and some wear.
This is the stone to have for sharpening gouges and carving tools. $17.00

Early Small Hand Forged Closed End Single Handle Scorp. Measuring 5
7/8" long, the head is 1 5/8" wide, the blade is 11/16" wide at the
center, and this weighs 3 oz unboxed. Not signed as to the maker. This
is in decent condition and was cleaned. There is the usual patina found
on these tools. The cutting face of the blade has some light pitting.
The edge has some light dings but it's close to sharp. The hand carved
handle is good other than some stains. The tang goes all the way though
the handle and is peened over at the end. This ain't perfect but these
guys are sure getting hard to find. $40.00
