266206 Mike Rock <mikerock@m...> 2018‑07‑28 Wiktor's website....... oops.
All,

I just had a nice long conversation with Wiktor.

It appears that no one else had contacted him about the ending of his
website.  He has been at it for many years and is just wanting to move
on.  He has plans for the future, but it wasn't my place to ask.

I got my butt chewed, very politely, for downloading the site.   He was
not happy that many of us had undertaken to 'save' his site, not knowing
the issues behind his decision.  Every gigabyte we download costs him
money, with no income from sales or advertising.

He asks that we delete what we have taken and just let it go away.

God bless.

Mike Rock

Do you know how hard it was to write this?!

So his fans ended up being his undoing.
Maybe we should write the play

Thank you Mike for contacting Wiktor, and for reporting back to this list.

The "It is time to say Goodbye!" announcement on the wkfinetools.com
website says it will go dark on 31 July. So, for the next few days we
have a chance to show appreciation for what he has done by sending a
donation (via the links on every page of the site).

I sent him some dough just now.

We've seen this happen a number of times over the years.. websites with
information we've come to rely on suddenly going dark for one reason or
another. I would humbly suggest that donations should be made to the
Internet Archive project, one of the goals of which is to preserve sites
that disappear.

Wiktor’s site may not have made enough to support him in his old age, but does
anyone know if it made enough to support itself? In other words, could it pay
for its own hosting, if the collective galoots were to look after its feeding?

Does google provide ‘free’ sites of 15Gb? other ‘free’ or low cost places?

Always assuming that the many copyright holders are happy to have their work
continue to be on the ‘net.

The cost of hosting the site it negligible. The time it would take to
convert it to a usable format and manage it going forward would be a
challenge. Besides.. I don't get the feeling this is what Wiktor
wants, otherwise he'd be exploring other options for hosting it.

GGs---

I'm sure I never said to Mr. Kuc just how much his site meant to me, and now,
Holy Smokes!            .....it comes as a complete surprise to me that Wiktor
is being charged for our downloading.  If he's been paying for us all this time,
we owe him a TREMENDOUS debt.

Subject: [OldTools] Wiktor's website content ?

I remember Wiktor setting up the site, and inviting participation from many
people here, to take their text and parts of various sites to host them in a
single, structured place.
A good portion of his site is work by other authors - Scott, James, Chris
Schwartz, many others.  The copyright in their work will still be with them.  If
someone has the articles, with authors names, then it would be reasonable to
enquire of them whether their work can be used on another site.

For myself, I’m sad to see it go.  Having places to search for the occasional
snippet of information is like the books in my library.  I may consult them only
a couple of times a year, but knowing they’re there and the answers are
available is a great comfort.
