266086 "Cal Meier" <calmeier@s...> 2018‑07‑11 Interesting French Plane
Perhaps it is important to consider the specialized usage of this plane. It was
labeled or inscribed as the “Plane of the Carpenter of the Church”. What might
this person (probably male) have spent his time making or repairing. Is it
possible that for some repairs (in situ) he might have reached over the back of
the bench or pew and been in a position to use primarily the one hand. In some
old pews that I looked at the long joint between the back and the pew bottom or
“seat” has split after years of support humans. In the extreme, if the church
was ancient enough the back and “seat” of the pew might have been made of two
long very wide boards. He may have needed to only smooth out some fractured
wood in the joint to repair the bench for regluing of this joint. The long
length also might have been useful in preparing a long glue joint.

Just a thought,
