265161 Don Schwartz <dks@t...> 2018‑02‑18 OT? Is St. Roy headed for the chopping block?
I know that politics are OT, but this is serious.

I read today, with no little dismay, that the Trump Budget proposes to
eliminate all federal funding for the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting over the next two years - NPR and PBS.

As a Canadian, I have always envied those of you who have had ready
access to St Roy's show, the longest-running series in American
television, for little money.

Here in Canada, he is only available by cable. I was an early
cable-cutter (1997 or thereabouts), so I did without his guidance for
many years. But then I learned his shows were available on DVD, and I
persuaded the local public library to purchase the whole set. I have
made my way through them over the past several years, and have begun to
watch the more recent series on the PBS website, which seems to suffer
from issues when it comes to delivering online content. Nonetheless, I
persist. I would be greatly disappointed were his show to be
discontinued for fundamentally political or any other reasons.  I
believe that St Roy, were he in Japan, would be declared a National
Treasure for the work he has done to acquire and share information about
hand-tool technologies and methods. And it would be shameful were he to
be cut off before his time. Those of you who have a pony in this race
may want to consider what if anything to do about it. I'm just an outsider.

I apologize in advance for this divergence. I'll crawl back in my igloo
now, and polish some ice.

Don

Many episodes of the Woodwright's Shop are available to watch online at:

www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop

Also, the PBS channel on Roku has episodes available.

Episodes earlier than 2006 or so are only available on the DVDs.

I'll also mention for those who have an iPad all these episodes are
freely available on the PBS app.

They have excellent private sources of funding.   public money has been
trifling.

But if ya want to have a voice how about we organize a find to keep
shows like Roy's alive? Why not bear the burden for our own interests
ourselves?

St. Roy is 67 years old.  Has he ever said how long he intends to
continue producing The Woodwright's Shop?  (With absolutely no evidence
one way or the other) I always imagined he'd eventually retire from TV
and focus on his school.  Of course, that man seemingly has more energy
at 67 than I had in my 20s.

My impression of PBS/NPR is that they get a big chunk of their budgets
from patronages and fan donations.  If the current administration is
successful in de-funding public broadcasting (which I doubt will fully
come to fruition), I would expect private funding to ramp up in response.

265174 Mark Pfeifer <markpfeifer@i...> 2018‑02‑19 Re: OT? Is St. Roy headed for the chopping block?
I think the answer is out there......the last season was reruns. Or as PBS put
it “some of Roy’s favorite episodes”.

Pretty sure the school sells out classes months in advance.

We saw Roy in WIlliamsburg 3 weeks ago, and he had all the energy he is famous
for. He was on stage 3 times and just a treat to listen to.

Since Roy is showing reruns this season ('his favorite episodes'), there has
been a lot of speculation this might be the last (apparently Norm did something
similar before wrapping up New Yankee Workshop). But given, this is season 37,
he certainly deserves a break.

I really wanted to ask Roy at the Williamsburg conference - but the right
opportunity did not present itself.

I always thought his show was pretty fully funded by sponsors (which is why it
is free to PBS affiliates).

I hesitate to bring this up, but at Handwork last summer, Roy said
something about State Farm withdrawing support because they didn't approve
of North Carolina's bathroom bill. Was that a factual assessment or
editorial humor? It was Roy. Who knows?

It might be a fully funded show, but if the PBS network loses federal
support, there may be no network to carry it, even if in reruns. WWS
reruns would be better than no St. Roy at all. Some of us may have
learned all we can from his shows, but the next generation of Galoots
still have much to learn from him.

FWIW
