265087 John Gunterman <jgunterman@s...> 2018‑02‑10 Ahoy, again.
Greetings fellow knuckle draggers.

Been about 15 years, and what a long and very (very) strange trip it's been!

Camped out up here in Craftsbury, VT for the next 2-3 years at a very small
and remote College... with a beautiful woodshop.

Only packed the "essentials" on this trip... It was hard to decide what to
bring and what to leave behind, but I think I got the basics covered.

the "first cut"

Time to make some shavings and work on getting my head and heart "right"
again.

A nice selection of LN. Nice set of tools you brought, but no glory photos
of your Uni wood shop? You can’t just tease us all and tell us it’s
fantastic without at least one photo.
BTW, Sterling, hmmm, that sounds familiar...One of my wife’s second
cousins went to Sterling College on a hockey scholarship I think (and the
only way that particular kid was going to college was if he could play
sports).
Cheers

Seriously - great to hear from you John. Missed you.

And double that. Welcome back to the porch, Mr. Gunterman.

That's some nice looking rust you got there.

I'll take some happy snaps Tuesday when it's a bit less chaotic in there.
We are still moving from the old premise to the new, right across the
street. The tailed apprentices are in place but need checking and possible
adjusting after being moved (via a bucket-loader) and building new student
workbenches, and clamp racks, and, and, and.... Since I'm T.A.'ing the
class, and been hired as the "Woodshop Attendant", I'm going to be quite
busy for the next few weeks, and I really can't be more delighted!!!!

Don't think they ever had a hockey team, pretty small student body here
(100'ish)
I know they have a Nordic Ski Team, perhaps?

All the best and really fantastic to hear from you.

If any porch dwellers are too new to know what a “guntershave“ is, now you’ve
met the man behind it all.

You know me too well, they are here, plus a few mini-shaves on my to-do
list.

Wow! The funny thing is I was thinking about you just the other day. I'm
on some bicycle lists and someone mentioned studded tires and it reminded
me of a post by *a* John Gunterman on the old ICEBIKE list years ago
(though maybe since you last posted here.) Not sure if it was you and I
didn't frequent the list as a rule but each time I see mention of studded
tires it somehow gets me thinking about spokeshaves :)

Nearly as good as finding out that Harrison Ford was a
member of this here list.

My introduction was only through the porch archives and one
of Rev. Ron's spokeshave kits, so this is nearly as good
as seeing some historical figure come back to life! This
is still my favorite shave:

265106 "yorkshireman@y..." <yorkshireman@y...> 2018‑02‑11 Re: Ahoy, again.
And it was only last week that I was describing the Gunterman shave to some
fellow bodgers - and here the man is, popping up as though he’s just back from a
long weekend.

A long weekend indeed! so good to hear from you again.

I’ll make myself a coffee in my Gunterman mug, park it on its spot on the bench,
and make a shaving or two to celebrate you rreturn.

Welcome home.

John,
It is indeed to see you back. Admittedly, it is also good to see some
names that show up when a long lost friend returns. Hope you've lost
none of your wit and grace (?)...
My how fast 15 years goes, whether we're having fun or not.

No chisels? No squares? No drawknives? Nay, which is more and most of all, no
spokeshaves? Are they entombed in the urns and sepulchers of mortality?
You left before I came here, but its a pleasure to meet you at last.

John,

Welcome back to the Porch, my friend. We saved your rocker. You'll have to
remove some dust and cobwebs, though.

I was just thinking about you the other day when I heard that the Jorgensen
[pipe] Clamp Co went out of business.

Looking forward to hearing about your latest Old Tool adventure.

Welcome back, John. Still using the curly maple we bought through Pete
Taran all those years ago and you kindly carried back from Pennsylvania.
Came in handy for a desk I built for my wife a couple Christmases ago. Hope
you're doing well.

John,
Let me add a welcome back too.

In case you don't remember, you offered a place in your tent to this
wandering Texan at one of the last Crane's Auctions in New Hampshire before
Richard retired. It sure beat sleeping in the car.

Those were fun times,
