264024 | <ecoyle@t...> | 2017‑11‑22 | file storage.....as in metal files |
Ya I know that files should be protected, , but just recently I purchased a few more patternmakers files, to add to the morasse of files, and on an impulse purchased from abebooks a catalogue of nicholson xf swiss pattern files. So know I know that there’s more files to get (scary thought) I generally pass on really dull and abused files now-unlike in y younger years-, but one file drawer is full of the larger files, and another filled with rasps from big to small, and yet another is filled with small ‘swiss pattern” files and rifflers of the finer sort. And they do run the gamut from tangible teeth to the so fine you’d hardly think they were files ...and then there's the watchmakers files that you’d think were just needles utntil you look at them under the microscope Well I don’t have much to go on in this pursuit of storage facilitation, having only purchased one patternmakers tool chests where the swiss pattern files were handled by old glass cutter handles and stacked upright, so I was wondering if the illuiminati could share their experience about seeing various and sundry ‘PATTERNMAKER” file storage systems. that they may have seen or encountered along the way over the years....were there drawers, tool rolls or whatever I’ve had alerts on searches for Drill bit storage cabinets, and have had a plethora pf responses, but generally been disappointed as they all seem to show storage for right hand twist bits and maybe Forstner, but ignore number/letter /augers of all ilks/ left hand/orifice/jewelers......but nothing comprehensive Eric in calgary who did not send the OMG message |

Eric and file-accumulating galoots: Your post made me smile, as it is probably impossible to own one of every type of file and unlikely that one could own one of every size of drill, especially since you mention direction of rotation. Canadian Guy Lautard has written a series of remarkable books called "The Machinist's Bedside Reader Vols. 1 - 4" One of them details the "Stroke 'o Genius" file rack, which you could study for ideas if not actually duplicate. One idea it embodies is tiers to accommodate files of different lengths. I once visited a small home shop which had all the files in notched racks on the wall over the benches. The racks were about 15 feet long, which is a LOT of files. Each had a handle and was hung with the handle up. The tangs were in slots. It occurred to me that a prolonged drop in humidity might result in some of the files falling out of their handles. (Note that this issue is sometimes mentioned in association with tanged chisels hung in this manner.) On the other hand, the inventory was highly visible and this would probably increase the likelihood of selecting the best possible file for the task at hand. Also helps in remembering what you already have to avoid needless duplications. I've not heard of any commercially-made storage racks for augers except early Russell-Jennings came in a three-tier wooden case. These did not have a high survival rate on real-world job sites. The augers could be a great excuse to use your set of hollowing planes. Alternatively, auger storage can be accommodated in a wall-hung lidded box which also stores your long- and short-sweep braces. (What's that you say? You have over two dozen braces? You must be a Galoot!) Huot still makes great drill storage solutions, although they are not cheap ! John Ruth Thinking about all he has to be thankful for this year, including this mailing list. ________________________________ From: OldTools |

John Ruth mentions a clever storage rack for machinist files thunk up by a fellow named Lautard. A little googling yields numerous mentions of his lazy- susan-inspired rack but no photos or textual description of such. And alas, his books appear to be out of print as well. So, have any of you folks made such a rack based on your reading of his book? It would be nice to see a photo or two so as to get a better idea of what the man wrote about. I may have a use for such an accessory as well. Thanks, John |

I've got a wall rack, a couple stump with holes drilled for needle files, and a couple drawers with dowel porcupines to keep them separate, and a bunch of tool rolls for rasps and rifflers. I'll get some photos up when I get home. They're not all together, but grouped by purpose. Cheers Claudio |

What about a simple magnetic bar tool holder? Or would that not be galootish enough? best wishes, Mike Lynd |

File racks can be a good approach for those of us who have both a surplus of unused wall space and a desire to cover it up. I don’t have either one, so most of my file storage is on edge in a tool cabinet drawer, with the file handles holding them apart. Small files are in a canvas tool roll, and my most used files at the bench are stored by hanging their handles on a few pegboard hooks. My unused saw files are mostly in their original manufacturer’s boxes, the used ones are in either a cloth holder or a wooden holder. Wherever files are stored, they shouldn’t be banging teeth-upon-teeth with adjacent files or hard metal objects, as that isn’t good for keeping the teeth sharp and effective. Charlie Driggs |

OK I still wear cutoff jeans in summer. When you do something your whole life its hard to give it up. Or rather, I cant find shorts near so comfortable as old worn Levi's cut off. I can't make a good men's suit, but anyone can sew file bags. http://users.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/images/oldtools/filebag.jpg I keep some bags nailed up on the backside of cabinet doors for access and space saving http://users.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/images/hometools/filebag2.jpg Small trays store a lot of needle files safely http://users.snowcrest.net/kitty/auction/filestorage.jpg http://users.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/images/hometools/filebag3.jpg Got to keep em clean! Colton's is the best file brush. A soft steel pick and an aluminum "rake" (which cuts its own teeth) to dig in and get the gunk out of your files. http://users.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/images/oldtools/filecleaning.jpg Of course, NOS stays wrapped in wax paper inside the old boxes, ready to get into battle at a moments notice haahha http://users.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/images/oldtools/filebox.jpg Yours Scott -- ******************************* Scott Grandstaff Box 409 Happy Camp, Ca 96039 scottg@s... http://www.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/ http://www.snowcrest.net/kitty/hpages/index.html |

Its just a blunt "chisel" that I made from roadsign aluminum. Rub it over the teeth a little, and they cut their own rake teeth, cleaning a file perfectly to the bottoms of the gullets yours Scott -- ******************************* Scott Grandstaff Box 409 Happy Camp, Ca 96039 scottg@s... http://www.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/ http://www.snowcrest.net/kitty/hpages/index.html |

I'm not really comfortable with having edge tools holding a magnetic charge, even the residual one that inevitably results from being hung from a magnetic tool bar. Stray metal particles and all that, dontchaknow. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Lynd" |

Squash an end in a vise, and use as above. Squash both ends , and you can make rakes of different pitch. Whoa, so many rakes. Doesn’t anyone else use a bit of chalk on their files? Then they more or less stay clean in the first place, unless they’re as dull as Trudeau-The-Younger Cheers Claudio |

I'm a chalk kind of guy but the copper gizmo is kind of neat. On 11/25/2017 6:00 PM, Claudio DeLorenzi wrote: > Whoa, so many rakes. > Doesn’t anyone else use a bit of chalk on their files? Irwin has several different wooden boxes for auger bits. Most of mine are from the 40's. For twist drills A set of nine augers, a screwdriver, and a countersink came with this one. https://youtu.be/BfRB8IrzRHI">https://youtu.be/BfRB8IrzRHI This is a store display that ended up at an antique store. https://youtu.be/exXKwwv_k38">https://youtu.be/exXKwwv_k38 Chris Anderson has one that I have yet to aquire one of. https://youtu.be/4nNr3fvzmg8">https://youtu.be/4nNr3fvzmg8 |

Galoots- For small files, I'm following David's suggestion, I was able to acquire a Russel-Jennings auger box sans bits with an odd lot of tools and keep my saw files in it Some of the more abundant sizes are wrapped in anti-corrosion paper to keep them from wearing each other while the sparser sizes get their own slot in the box.
