263979 John Ruth <johnrruth@h...> 2017‑11‑16 Re: Turning saw blades...
GG's:

Richard's post about turning saw blades prompts me to ask for a refresher on
something I would suppose has been previously discussed on the Porch: How to
make holes in sections of bandsaw blade. It's not the ideal turning saw blade
material because it may have the wrong temper, but it is readily available.

Subject: [OldTools] Turning saw blades...

Here’s the background..
I’m making a bookcase - Oak of course, Uprights to have ‘stained glass’
inserts, circular patterned ends, blah blah..

The glass inserts are discontinuous to allow the shelves to be housed, so there
are three panels to a side, 2 inshe wide, semi circular ends. The semi circles
are easy, a 2”” diameter sharp bit, and join the two holes with saw cuts,
chisels, planes, floats to finish, add rebates and chamfers to taste.

The saw bit though… In thinner stuff a coping saw would do, even a pad saw at a
pinch. What I need is a turning saw. Chance to make up a bow saw frame - the
drawing has been with me for about a decade (That’s ‘last week’ in galoot terms)
When I look on the net for a supplier, Woe, Woe and thrice Woe. Now I wish I’d
participated in the group buy a decade ago.

However, the point of the story is this site

Whilst I was asleep the last dozen years, this company has been accumulating the
last of the real saw makers in Sheffield, even absorbing Clifton - who were the
guys who ende up with the old Edward Preston set of tooling for stuff like
shoulder planes.
What an interesting site - all manner of useful stuff, and a wide, wide
selection of hand saws. I’m off to the workshop to sift through my saw stash
and find how many saw screws I need, and even whether I shold spring for a
couple of new panel saws - just so I have some before they close down. Last
time I resisted the urge Record tools vanished, and I had to start buying 71’s
(Shoulder planes, Jeff) on the second hand market because they were out of
production.

Anyway, though at least the UK galoots may want to know. Mind, they probably
all do, its just me that’s been out of circulation a while.
