Assembled Galooterati,

My Son-in-law collects old USA made wrenches, ratchets and other mechanics
tools. I am trying to find something unique, unusual or semi-rare for a
Christmas gift for him.

I have already given him a Wizard ratchet wrench a couple of Christmas' ago (it
was a huge hit). I have given him a set of Plvmb (Plomb) double open end pebble
finish wrenches.

Any suggestions from the group about something cool you have seen that might fit
the bill?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Brent K

Brent and Assembled Galooterati,

The Kraeuter Tool Co. of Newark, NJ made some very ornate wrenches, pliers, etc.

The extra work that they put into their forging dies borders on actual art!

Why not try putting "vintage adjustable wrench" into ebay?

for example:

Of the future? I'll point to a recently funded kickstarter for a credit
card sized multitool that combined wrench, axe, protractor and a few dozen
more functions, none of which were "leaving people speechless" even though
it might excel at that above all others.

I never knew how much interest there is in wrench's, is there a site like OT?
I guess I need to look through my “draw weights”. Is there a list of
manufactures
of interest or is it by use?

Both. And there is a much much bigger array of patents and slight differences
than in planes.

You don't know the half of it...... Alloy artifacts, papawswrench, The Wrenching
News, etc... There are a few forums, as well as sections on more general tool
forums. I don't know of anything quite like OT, though, and I think there are a
few people on the porch that I have spied in the wrench world. (I am not a
connoisseur, but use these sites as reference)

Millers Falls butcher saw punch, think its called a midget.

Or a dedicated spade bit from Blackburn Tools

I have used a Whitney punch for thinner blades on occasion. A carbide drill bit
works well, if you have a rigid drill setup.
Abrasive cut can be done (spin a dowel of soft brass tube the right size and use
abrasive slurry).
Spot heating to soften the spot where drilling will be done lets you get through
with even an eggbeater drill (you can spot heat to red with a small tip torch or
using friction-- a fast spinning rod the size of the desired hole pressed to the
blade will do it) and standard twist drill.

There are plenty of other ways

garagejournal.com is the giant discussion group site for wrenches
you find thousands of guys who all buy new Snap-on for astro money,
(kind of like the guys who collect LN boxes) and brag about it, plus
many others too

thegaragegazette.com is where the old mechanics who love old tools hang out
  Also papawswrench.com,  even more intimate

You already bought him a Wizard ratchet, that's a pretty desirable
item. (was it striped bluing as issued?)
And a Plumb pepple box end set?  Geeze?  nice

OK my personal favorite right now is J.H. Williams stuff
Williams was in the wrench business long before Snappy. Williams were
the boys from Brooklyn.
Snap-On invented the "spring n ball" and revolutionized ratchets and
other drive tools.
But Williams was right there. Plus they offered style like nobody else.
The good part for me is, they are mostly overlooked by the wrench
collecting community, so you can still have the cream of the crop.
From 1/4" deco to the monster 1".

Scott,
Yeah the Wizard ratchet wrench had the case hardened finish, I really like the
way the finish looks, on guns and old tools. That blue marbled look is just
beautiful to my eye.

He really isn't much into Snap-On. Over priced and he is budget minded. He
prefers old Plomb, Proto, Williams, Sherman Klove (S-K). Like many other types
of tools, there was a style to the older ones--a look, a shape, a feel to them
which is missing from new tools.

I can't even begin to guess how many hundreds of sockets and many dozens of
ratchets he has, so finding something unique is getting harder every year. I
will research more on the JH Williams.

I am afraid I am falling down the Eifel Plierench rabbit hole. Ed sent me one to
be given to my son in law, and I really like it! This one is a March 1944 issue
in great shape. I think he is gonna dig it.

I want to thank everyone who has made suggestions. I have great ideas now for
his birthday and next Christmas, and I have found a couple of things I might
begin to acquire as well.

I am also working on a child size woodworking tool kit for my Grandson. I have
an 18" panel saw that I am making a new handle for out of some curly pear which
came from a downed neighborhood tree. There will be some wooden handle and
perfect handle screw drivers in it, a small hammer I am re handling, a coping
saw and small block plane and egg beater drill. As he gets older I will add
chisels and a no. 3 plane to the kit as well as brace and bits. I am having more
fun putting the kit together for him than he will have using it!

And Scott, is that a white velvet display cloth under there?
I picture you wearing those white cotton conservator's gloves while
handling these beauties...
Cheers from a rainy, dreary Waterloo
