I just got back from China on Wed night. Some amazing craftsmen in China-
Not only woodworking. In the smaller villages i found several people
making a living doing handicraft work. Watched various people working in
their very small owner-operated work shops- (no bigger than a closet
really) carving wood and stone, calligraphy and art, basket weaving, toy
making, box making, wooden tea pot supports, and one guy was binding
various sizes of personal notebooks with leather covers. Dozens of
different crafts. These people were all pretty much still doing things
the old ways, one at a time, by hand. Most of the craftspeople were older,
I noticed. I think the young have all gone to the big cities, where the
economy is booming. People change jobs all the time in the city,
apparently, because fast growing companies are always looking for
employees-- companies keep offering better wages/ benefit packages hoping
to retain their workers and attract more talent.

Fascinating country and people, although be warned that Chinese government
agencies block certain American companies such as Google. (Basically
nothing from Google works, or works so slowly as to be useless- search,
email, etc, just don't work in China). Unfortunately, none of the
craftspeople I met spoke any English, and my Mandarin is limited to asking
"how much for this" and "Where is the washroom"
The people were very friendly and helpful, even in the big cities- people
went out of their way to help foreigners. We had a great experience
travelling through Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. Young people are all
connected to the net, but only to Chinese versions of social media (the
government has blocked almost all foreign social media apps) and older
people don't even use mobile phones (that I noticed anyways), and it's
unlikely we will ever get any Chinese Galoots involved in our group, mainly
because of the language restrictions.
Cheers from Waterloo
