263350 Matt Williams 2017‑09‑20 Re: Tales from the Forest Service
My dad gave me Two little Savages to read when I was a kid.  It was a wonderful
book and gave me lots of ideas.  I tried tanning a rabbit hide and made jerky
because of it.  Highly recommend!!

 Galoots All,

As some of you may know, I grew up canoeing around  Indiana and Michigan
with my wolf-dog and a .22. Most of my family has a connection to the
past and a fair number have an outdoor connection as well. A Cousin
rebuilds puffer-belly railroads and then turns them over to whoever
hired him to do the job, another was a Generalist/Ranger for USGS, my
Brother is Indiana Jones, but for real. An Aunt and Uncle were Rangers
in Colorado at the same time that Dodds was in Idaho, and their cabin
looked a lot like the one in the story...much of the country looked like
his pictures. Lines are on maps, the countryside doesn't much know what
state it's in. They had a trout stream about 100 yds down-slope from the
cabin and bears and whatnot sniffing around after dark.

It was a different world that I grew up in and, frankly, there are too
many people and too much noise in this one. Anyway, I came across this
as I was editing an article for an on-line magazine, that will not be
named, and thought that it might just touch a chord.

You might want to read the story about Earl Dodds.

And a story for those who have youngsters with an outdoor bent.
