Greetings gathered gang of experts - Several years ago I turned a bowl from padouk .... nice enough job - 8-9" diameter and 2 1/2" high. I sat on the shelf and got greener by the day. I boxed it up and sotred it above the garage ... 8 years ago. I dug it out yesterday ... steel wooled and waxed it, and already it's turning fuzzy green. WTF? Demon bowl? I'm about ready to immerse it in vinegar .... amonia ??? I dunno ... something has to kill the growing menace. Any of you ever encounter this? Any idea how to attack the problem? microwave? Soak in holy water overnight, have an imam pray towards Mecca three times, have a rabbi use it in a tevilah, and invoke the power of Woden and Thor (ideally without blood sacrifice, but I'm not judging.) I wonder if freezing it would work but I'm not suggesting that because I don't know the moisture content..... Here in NC, USA leaving it in the sun for a day would probably do it.....ship it to me after Irma passes I'll give it a go. Sent from my iPhone |

They say the only cure for mildew is sunlight, but personally I think oxygen is a big part. In the winter when its wet I have to be really careful with bath towels. They want to mildew at the drop of a hat. I accidentally found that if I hang one in front of a running fan and force air though it? It kills the mildew in minutes flat. Its become a customary thing for me. Use the towel then hang it over a running fan for a few minutes, then go ahead and hang it normally to finish dry. It gets me by. Meanwhile I would put my bowl where the sun can get to it for a day or two? Oh also, another trick. My mother used to live in east Texas. You could literally swim down the street from the humidity. Unlike anything else I ever experienced. The bathroom was a continuous struggle for everyone. Mold would sprout so fast and fierce as to grab you in the shower and take you down. It was discovered that lemon oil furniture polish would keep it at bay when nothing else would. All the girls in Hemphill Texas swear by it. yours Scott -- ******************************* Scott Grandstaff Box 409 Happy Camp, Ca 96039 scottg@s... http://www.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/ http://www.snowcrest.net/kitty/hpages/index.html |

I thought that lemon oil was actually just mineral oil with a bit of scent and colouring added. Apparently it's mainly water, with some hydrocarbons added ... www.hantover.com/msds%5C10550.pdf FWIW Don -- "You can tell a man that boozes by the company he chooses" The Famous Pig Song, Clarke Van Ness |
