I too, am intrigued by the half moon design and will make a set when I find
time.

(within the half-moons) would intefere with their utility. I will make a more
traditional pair with inlaid piano key & ebony bits when IGART and a nice
straight-grained piece of mahogany. In the interim, I use a pair of aluminum
angles , one of which I blackened with a Sharpie. I place the black one closer
to my viewing position.
The background needs to be light to contrast w/ the dark wood. Here is the pair
I have used for several years: https://www.flickr.com/photos/77280442@N.../35993102615/in/dateposted-

Cherry, w/ Holly and Ebony inserts. I find I see the differences best w/ the
Holly to the rear. This is the only tool, so far, that I have put a hang hole
in: https://www.flickr.com/photos/77280442@N.../35993102645/in

This was the second pair I built. My first pair were quite good so I thot I
would make a set to give away for Galoot-a-Claus. If you look closely you will
see two flaws so I kept these and gave away the first pair. Since then I have
made a third set that also went out as a Galoot gift. Fun projects.
