I too, am intrigued by the half moon design and will make a set when I find
time.
The half-moons look cool. But I wonder if whatever is in the background 
(within the half-moons) would intefere with their utility. I will make a 
more traditional pair with inlaid piano key & ebony bits when IGART and 
a nice straight-grained piece of mahogany. In the interim, I use a pair 
of aluminum angles , one of which I blackened with a Sharpie. I place 
the black one closer to my viewing position.

 From the samples I've seen, most vintage pairs are about 16-18 inches. 
I wonder why?
