262679 William Ghio <bghio@m...> 2017‑07‑17 Half moon winding sticks
Mark Firley blogged about his winding stick find. See the explanation here: https://thefurniturerecord.wordpress.com/2017/07/15/my-
turn/">https://thefurniturerecord.wordpress.com/2017/07/15/my-turn/

In his blog post he links to a couple of entries by Chris Schwarz on the subject
and Chris, in turn, gives a shout out to Dan Schwank over at Red Rose
Reproductions, who makes them for sale: http://redrosereproductions.com/tools/#!/Winding-

Dan is located in Lancaster County, PA, close enough to Maryland’s beautiful
Eastern Shore that I have run into him a dozen or so times at various venues and
have played w/ his version of the winding sticks (he makes great planes too).
Well, after all the recent press I decided that I too needed to have a set.

Here is my go at them: https://www.flickr.com/photos/77280442@N.../35173354323/in/dateposted-

public/

Anybody else unable to resist making a set?

Nope. In the grand tradition of woodworkers everywhere, I went to my scrap pile.
I’m not cutting up a plank for a shop apparatus. Unfortunately, all my scrap
Walnut was too small, flat sawn or figured from proximity to large knots. Then I
spotted the chunk of Ipe. Rejected it as too hard to work, then thought about
how nice it looks when oiled. So in the end I called to the apprentice in the
corner to saw it for me and had at it.

Started w/ 4/4 stock and marked the diagonal across the end. Took that w/ a
bevel and adjusted the apprentice’s table. That gave me two pie slices. I don’t
know what the original width was, I simply cut the pointed top down to get to a
width of 2 inches leaving a width at the top of 5/16. I also cut the bottom of
the triangle to create a flat, so the bottom (or base) ended up at 7/16. My #50
cut the rebate for a 1/4 inch piece that creates the straight edge to the half
moon. Half moons were made w/ a Frostner bit. They are 18 3/4" long. Other than
starting w/ a piece that I knew would/could give me a two inch height, the
dimensions are what happened along the way. After smoothing all the edges, my
two inches shrunk to 1 7/8.

Have fun,

Bill

Is the added work of the half-moons worthwhile, or are they just damn cool?
