From DAT:

Ward & Co, of NY NY.

Started in 1870, no known end date.

The "J" and 1870 date were reported for an ironing machine/mangle; the
slitting gauge and bit reported for a NY Ward & Co. were not necessarily
from the same company or time.

BITS,HOUSEHOLD TOOLS,MARKING GAUGE

There is also a Ward & Co on Newark NJ, which was Leonard Ward.

Not much in DAT right now on this one.
