262207 "Brent Parkin" <brent@e...> 2017‑04‑27 Galoot Visits
GG's,

Well this has to be the longest time between posts in Galoot history. I
think it has been six years since my last post.. Hey ya get busy.

I have to say, one of the best parts of being in this group was when I made
lots of Galoot visits way back in the past. I hosted the first Toronto area
Galootpalooza way back in the 90's. It was fantastic!! I also visited
Seattle and was privileged to meet Steve Lamantia, and a couple of other
Galoots. It's been awhile so just who all was there has faded a bit. I
think Michael and Ken if my old brain still works. It was a great day and
we had a good time.

Folks here are a nice bunch. It has been too long since I lurked and
occasionally posted. Hopefully I will get more into the spirit again. I
live on the Canadian Prairies now where there are few wood workers compared
to the big centres and fewer tools to gloat over. But I suggest, folks make
arrangements and meet up. It is an amazing thing to be among other like
minded folks that pursue such a simple thing as working wood.

That being said, is anyone going to Handworks in Amana this year. I plan to
make the 14 hour drive and expect it to be a great time.

Regards,

Brent Parkin

Well put. What a treat to finally meet someone you have had a realtionship with
on the innerweb. I feel fortunate to have been in the shops of several of folks
that I have corresponded with. In my case, when I moved, I found I was about a
mile and a half from Bill Ghio - a hand tool inspiration if there ever was one.

I have to say that I completely agree. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Chuck
face to face. I only wish our trip was longer so we could have spent more
time together. But we packed quite a bit into a short time.

I also regret not spending more time with John Johnston before he escaped
Memphis for greener pastures. I missed an opportunity to learn a lot from
him in his shop.

Likewise, and I got to meet Chuck and his brother and talk about lathe
chucks and submarines, as well as their completed wood projects. So if
you're in or around Seattle, by all means take the good man up on his
offer. You'll be glad.

And if you're in the Corvallis area (Oregon, not Montana) and have a bit of
time, gimme a holler too. It'll be fun.

Jeff, the door is always open! Asheville is a great place to visit.

Gentle Galoots,

I have to admit to a tinge of jealousy when I read about the frequent
in-person interactions between and among Galoots living in the SF Bay area
(BAGs), the Middle Atlantic area (MAAGs), and the Toronto area (TAGs?).
There aren't quite so many of us Galoots living in close proximity here in
the Pacific Northwest.

In the past I have had the good fortune to be visited in my shop by Ed
Minch and by Adam Maxwell, and those visits have been duly reported to the
Porch. I run into a few other Galoots at PNTC (Pacific Northwest Tool
Collectors) meetings, namely Gary Allan May and Jack Birky. But more would
be better.

Last fall I discovered that Galoot Jeff Thieme would be visiting Seattle
from his home near Memphis, so we arranged to get together in person for
lunch on October 10. We had a good visit, told plenty of lies--oops, I mean
old tool stories--then paid a visit to E. Hardwick's, an old-time hardware
store in Seattle that stocks many galootish items packed floor-to-ceiling
in narrow aisles. Good times.

Then on March 18 I happened to be in Albany, Oregon. Knowing that Galoot
Curt Seeliger lives in nearby Corvallis, we arranged to get together over
dinner in a local brew pub. This was a particularly fortuitous
circumstance, since I had the good fortune to have Curt as my Galootaclaus
this past holiday season. Again, we told plenty of old tools stories and
had a good visit.

It's nice to sit here on the virtual Porch with the assembled Galooterati,
but it's particularly nice to have the opportunity now and then to visit
with other Galoots in person. If you are a Galoot, and you are going to be
in the Seattle area, please give me a ping.

Cheers,
Chuck Taylor

I bought a multi tool the other day, it has a beautiful rosewood handle and a
bunch of bits but it is missing the jaws to the chuck.  Does anyone know where I
could get jaws that would work for this?  I'd love to be able to use it!Thanks

Speaking of meeting up with Galoots, a couple of weeks ago, I had the
pleasure recently of meeting up with Chicago galoot Wes Groot of CityBoy
Forge fame. We met Wes for lunch at his favorite breakfast place, and had
some great food. He then guided us over to his shop, and gave us his
two-bit tour.

Wow, what a shop, what a tour. He had photos on his wall of some of his
work, and gave us some background on them, and work in progress around the
shop. The level of detail in his work is incredible. He described his
process, going from customer supplied pictures to a sketch to final 3D
piece of metal, and the process of combining pieces into a finished piece
of art. He gave us a quick demonstration of his induction heater, showed
us the various tools used in his blacksmithing (making more tools) and
other work. Couple of really cool vintage tools hiding in his shop.

And we even got to see one of his Gerstners, and meet his sidekick Gracie
too.

And a pic, to prove it really happened (and yes, Wes is REALLY tall)

Thanks again for the hospitality Wes.

Holy smokes--Wes is a half-head taller than Kirk?! Kirk may be the
unofficial TBW (Tallest BAG Walkin'), so that's not nothin'.
