262065 Bill Webber <ol2lrus@v...> 2017‑03‑26 Bud Brown's 50th
I went to Bud Brown's 50th show and auction.I was a little distracted by
other events this year and was thinking of canceling, but I'm a
collector, that's what I do, so off we went.I think attendance each year
is a little less, and fewer dealer tables, fewer galoots. I don't know
too many of the galoots that usually attend, but Tony Seo and Tom Dugan
are pretty regular attendees, but not this year. The Leachmonster didn't
make it.54 tables, down from 80 years ago.

I didn't find anything at the show.I've been doing this perhaps too long
and I didn't find anything of interest.I spent most of Friday going over
a lengthy list I'd made up for the auction.I was disappointed with most
of the items I'd marked.I know I would never submit an absentee bid for
any of the items described as Fine or Mint.Absentee bidders likely do
better on the older, unique, and patented items where condition is not
so important.

The alarm was set for 6:00 AM Saturday morning. When it went off I was
thinking seriously of going back to sleep.I knew if I skipped the
auction and something I wanted went for cheap I would regret not
going. We made it there on time.Prices, prices, prices! Most of what I had
marked went too high. That is usually how it goes. There were still many
lots under $100.I'm not savvy enough to say if prices are going up or
down; down I expect, overall.I got 4 lots.I was sitting a few rows
behind Jim Bode and Greg James. They were buying like they were stocking
a hardware store.I think they got every third or fourth lot.About half
the lots went to absentee bidders.I think I did fairly well.I won 3 of
my lots when Jim Bode gave his little negative head shake to stop his
bidding. I got three lots of mostly NIB English rules and a Paul Hamler
#50.The latter I have been looking for quite a while. So that's it for
another 6 months.

Next up is CRAFTS.I've never been to that one.Is it just tailgating and
an auction or are there dealer sales, too?Is it like PATINA?

Waht is the item 2nd from the bottom that looks like a level with numbers on the
side? Nice looking bunch ‘o rules.

I used to go to CRAFT 10 years ago and more and it was just like PATINA -
outside tailgating and inside dealers, and the auction. Last time there I
passed on a nice Stanley #1 with unique graining on the handle at $700 and saw
it on a dealer’s site for $2400 shortly thereafter.

Tom Dugan was down with a cold, and not willing to spread it around. I figure I
did pretty good selling in the PATINA parking lot a couple of weeks ago, so I
wasn't jonesing. Plus, I've had less satisfaction at the Brown affairs as the
years go by and my "needs" get tempered.

The catalog had it as "..what looks like a Preston12" rule with level
and plumb vials, but unsigned, in a leather case. The lot included a
J.S. Rabone four-fold, two-foot No. 1190 rule with level vial, NIB.
That's below the level in the picture.

I was at the dealer sale, arriving with daughter #3, who quickly parked herself
in an easy chair near the men's room.

I spent better than two hours scouring tables for stuff I did not need. I spent
a total of $16.00 American, on three items, bought from the dealer who always
has Rubbermaid containers, marked $1.00, $3.00 and so forth (sorry, I can't
recall your name).

Bought a Stanley #299 utility knife, $1.00, a Stanley Everlasting chisel in
1/4", nearly full length, $3.00 and a wooden cased stone, that spoke to me,
$12.00. The chisel had a coat of red paint over a coat of gray, which easily
cleaned off, to leave me a great chisel, already sharpened and used. The knife
had two new blades inside, and was put to use cutting up carpeting in prep for
new. The prize was the stone, however. Stone was about 2" X 8", and had very
minor dish to it. Felt very fine, and looked natural. I spent time flattening
on a piece of zirconia sanding belt, and my effort was repaid with a nice
Washita, and a nice box.

Had some specific items I was looking for, and saw none of them, or rather none
I wanted to purchase!

As mentioned by Tom and Bill, number of tables were low and attendance seemed
off also. However, since I missed this year's Patina, I needed a too sale fix!
Didn't see anyone I knew, and about 3:30, daughter and I took leave of the
place.

Well I was ready to hit the road but we had a bit of freezing rain blow
through just when it was time to leave and I wimped out. Turned out that
it wasn't as bad as forecast but by the time that happened it was too
late to make the 2 hr ride down. After having better than usual
weather and buying for Jan and Feb than I've had in a long time, March
has just been ugly in that respect and I could have used a decent load
of fresh stuff.

Yeah sorta, just a bit smaller. There are tailgate sales before the
auction, depending on the ^*%#$! weather, it might be pretty good. The
auction there sometimes tends to go a little cheaper but again, the
quality isn't always there either. Worth the trip just to check it
out. I haven't been there in a few years and probably won't this year.

Tony (where the summer fleas open next weekend..yeah!)

Nice story, and it's especially swell to hear it in perspective from someone
who's been going for eighty years.
