262034 Dwight Beebe <dwb1124@g...> 2017‑03‑21 A short film about a shovel maker
Gracious Galoots,

Pinched this from a post by Martin Donnelly. His postings about tools in
upcoming auctions often include interesting film shorts. I thought people
might enjoy this one. Only ten minutes long, but worth watching.

Those folkways films seem like a gold mine, and I'm always glad when
someone digs up and shares a nugget around.

Here's another one for the mix, noted by Eric Goodson via David Fisher. On
bowl carving, naturally, and in German. Still easy to understand.

PS... I'm always looking for darkroom equipment & supplies, old or new-ish.

Works for me in Firefox. Maybe try removing the '?m=1' at the end?

I get the page just fine. But click the video and it says "Video is
Unavailable".

GG's

Mr. Ward, the wooden shovel maker, is speaking about locations in or near
Sullivan County, NY.

This makes the distant sound of a steam locomotive whistle quite a mystery. Was
there perhaps a RR museum with a working steam locomotive active in that area in
1974?

Wooden shovels are/were The preferred type of shovel in apple cider mills, of
which NY State has many.

Curt,

The link didn't work for me either. Poking around, I ended up searching YouTube
for "der letze seines standes der mollenhauer" and found what I think is the
video you meant, since that is the text I found at your link. It translates
roughly to "the last stand of the wooden bowl maker." Here is the direct link:

There seems to be a whole series of related videos on "Der Letzes Seines
Standes? ....." Was this the one you were referring to?

Indeed, there are several uploads of the same thing. And it is part of a
series of old trades. Lots to see, and not enough shop time. What a
first-world problem!

(I haven't seen the film)

Wooden shovels are(were) also used on malt floors.

I'm wearing a path between MJD's auction page vids and YouTube.
