The above video is about the last hand forged axe making outfit (Pioneer
Axe Co) in small town Maine in the early 1960's, taken a few months before
it too went under. I'm interested in smithing, so I was interested.
Check out how highly skilled craftsmen worked to make axes.
They worked pretty hard for very crappy pay (by 1962 standards). (The
chief guy apparently went elsewhere to get twice as much money to sweep
floors).
  OSHA would freak re safety.
Cheers from Waterloo

Great video! Interesting to find a video of how an axe is made today. I
hunted around for a while and found lots of videos on axes but nothing
about how a factory made axe is made.

Did run across several videos on splitting using a twist action as
discussed last month. Several about Tom Clark and his twist techinque on
Youtube.

Thanks for posting this, Claudio. Imagine working for $1.25 an hour!
The minimum wage in 1964 was $1 (and I was working under the table after
school for $.75. As for OSHA, well, looks like two guys working
together with no employees; OSHA could grimace, but couldn't take any
action.

I wonder how much hearing protection and a dust mask would have improved
those workmen’s lives? That hammering and grinding must have taken a toll on
their health.

Regards,
Steve - thankful for readily available and inexpensive safety equipment
