259941 Ed Minch <ruby1638@a...> 2016‑08‑25 New Shop
GGG

When we moved to our new house 8 years ago, I took all the cr*p from old
basement shop and just set it up logically in the new basement shop as it came
off the truck. So I finally decided to make-over the hand tool 1/2 of the area
- at 14X19’ it a very generous size that is in the same room as the p*w*r stuff
- total shop 30X19’. A side benefit is that I can finally separate the users
from the accumulation.

The foundation is a pre-fab insulated construction, but I added more insulation
and screwed plywood on the walls. Painted white it really makes a difference.
The bench is way out in the middle all by itself - plenty of room to work all
around, with all the users in easy reach

Ed:

You do realize that when you arrive at home there is going to be a few dozen
people in your living room, waiting for you, there to stage an intervention.
Dude, you need help. It is not healthy what you are doing! All those tools in
your shop? What are you going to do with those? Think of all the poor people
in Appalachia and California and Michigan and Iowa who can't do woodworking
because you are hoarding all those tools! Think of your poor starving spouse
and emaciated children who don't have enough food because you've spent all your
money buying all those tools!

But, yes, the shop does look really pretty.

Micah,

Ed’s kids are probably toughened up like mine.

Spokeshave’s a good meal once you get the Bernaise right.

Gentle Galoots,

Creating a shop / collection that neat seems almost blasphemous to Old Order
Neanderthals such as myself , but surely we can all admire Ed's achievement.

You do realize, of course, that putting all one's planes, braces, and especially
SAWS all in one row makes it far too easy for one's wife to COUNT THEM!!!

Aye! There's the drawback! Well, one drawback. The other, a sort of
corollary, is that having a dedicated space filled with, say, planes
makes it harder to find space for another plane.

The white walls are a wonderful improvement over the blue-board walls I
must say! Depressingly dark before.

And rust is a good source of iron.

It won’t be that neat for long - you should have seen it before the change

If you have too many tools, you need more storage space. If you have empty
shelves, you need more tools. It’s the natural balance of nature.

Wow how cool is this! Many of these shelves and racks are new?
How long were you working at it?

Its almost like being there, the pix are so good and clear. And it
feels so much like home. wow again
The paint really brightens up. I am always surprised how much it helps
bounce the light.

Its all completely great, except maybe that brace rack hanging off
plywood gussets. Not sure how time I would spend directly below that
123224 pounds of iron. lol :)

Way to go Partner. Man it looks good!
       yours Scott

congrats on the new digs. Looks subterranean which is nice for thermal

Scott

I spent about 4 weeks - dropped everything and concentrated. Pretty great shop
to be in at this point. All of the wall-hung racks are new and most have
dovetailed corners to support weight. The brace rack will get moved. Thanks.
