184546 "Jason Knight" <knight.j.e@g...> 2008‑11‑11 Bio update
Hello all,
'Tis the season, and, wanting to stay on the good side of
Galootaclaus, thought a bio update might be a good thing. Since last I
posted, not much has changed, except the amount of shop time seems to
have dropped :)
I live in Auburn, Maine, teaching high school science - mostly bio,
but also chemistry and physics as needed. I've been making things out
of wood for quite a while, mostly quick and dirty projects and home
repairs. For a half dozen years or so I've been trying to learn to
work wood with a bit more care. I've accumulated a reasonable set of
tools - basic set of planes (jointer, jack, smoother, router), a bunch
of saws under varying amounts of rust, a couple of braces, and a
serviceable set of mostly newer chisels. Nothing to brag about, but
quite enough to keep some shavings on the floor.

House projects have taken over most of my free time, the most recent
of which was rebuilding the barn/garage
(http://picasaweb.google.com/knight.j.e/TheBarn# if you're
interested). An early 1900's (graffiti on the wall is from 1930) pier
and beam construction, about 20 by 20, built in a yard that floods
each spring, it has been rotting from the bottom up for quite a long
time. Spent the summer gingerly replacing piers, beams, joists, and
flooring. Lots of electrons and even some dinosaur juice went in to
the restoration, but the result is worth it - I share the space with
the kids' bikes, but it is pretty much all shop space. I picked up an
old treadle powered sewing machine with thoughts of building a lathe,
but I think my wife wants to use it to sew or some such crazy thing.
Now that the barn is fixed, maybe I'll have to build a spring pole
late instead. Other projects under way include an arts and crafts-ish
bed frame and a tool cabinet. Right now, the tools are scattered
loosely across several shelves and dumped in to a bunch of Clementine
tangerine boxes.

The family now includes 3 GIT's. As of winter 2008, they are 1, 3 1/2,
and 5 1/2. The oldest is getting to be a real helper. He helped snap
lots of chalk lines and started the nails for a good bit of the
flooring in the garage.

Typing this is starting to eat into shop time, so I think this will be
enough for now. Perhaps a bio part 2 will come at a later time...

Cheers,
Jason
