GGs; To avoid hijacking another thread, I've come up with this catchy subject line ;-> In discussing suggested tools for new galoot Chris, Brian says: "...having recently come across some Stanley 750s--why is the Lie-Nielson chisel based on the 750? People on this list have recently stated that the new L-N chisels are better for chopping than paring. Is that their main intended use? If so, why not sqaure-sided firmers? L-N calls their tools "Bevel Edge Socket Chisels" while Stanley called the 750 the "Bevel Edge Butt Chisel". Let me throw something else out...a few years ago, I was at a beach barbecue with some neighbors and their extended family (~100 people altogether). The grill was made from what appeared to be an old fuel oil tank. Big enough that it was mounted in a small trailer and towed around. Among the various things in the trailer was a steel bucket about half full of rusty water. The patriarch of this group owned the grill, trailer and contents. He dumped the bucket on the ground and among the stuff that fell out was a chisel. No handle and rusted to where it was almost unrecognizable. I picked it up and rubbed it off enough to see the markings on the socket. He asked if I knew what it was - I told him yeah, a 3/4" Stanley 720 bevel edge paring chisel. He said that since I knew so much about it, I could have it. Cleaned it up, made a handle for it and it's among my go-to users. Edge to top of socket is 8", with 6" below the socket. If you've followed this far, here's the question. Where does the 720 series fit in? I'm postulating Stanley made more than just the 720 and 750....700, 710, 730, 740 etc. Anyone know? Charley asks (reasonably, as always): >If you've followed this far, here's the question. Where does the >720series fit in? I'm postulating Stanley made>more than just the 720 >and750....700, 710, 730, 740 etc. ? Charley (and all), In the 1940 Stanley No. 34 catalogue (at about the apex of Stanley chisel production), The following 7XX chisels are listed: 720 - Firmer, Blades 6 Inches Long (11 sizes, 1/8 - 2") 740 - Pocket, Blades 4 1/2 Inches Long (same 11 sizes) 750 - Butt, Blades 3 1/4 inches Long (Same 11 sizes) 760 - Butt, Swedish Pattern, Blades 2 3/4 inches Long ((10 sizes, no 1/8") Also, Stanley sold sets of each of these (six chisels in widths of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/4 & 1 1/2") The set of 720s was numbered 726 The set of 740s was numbered 746The set of 750s was numbered 756The set of 760s was numbered 766 Walter's big book does not list a number 710, 730, 770, etc In my experience, the chisels numbered 760 (Swedish Pattern Butt Chisels) are the least common that you see, and would be a (IMHO) a great chisel to collect. Hope this helps, Sandy ________________________________ Tools for Sale list at http://www.sydnassloot.com/tools.htm Brace Collection at http://www.sydnassloot.com/brace.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

I've always wondered what model Stanley chisel I had, and it turns out it is a 1 inch #40 cabinet makers bevel edge model, type 6. Bob is asking 179.95 for one. I found mine in the tractor room of a stable with a chunk out of the cutting edge. I ground a new edge on it, honed it, and use it for all sorts of stuff. I guess I'll give it a little more respect now! Spike Cornelius PDX Crazy for Shavings And stuff to make them! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Spike, Yeah, that's Bob. He's a really nice guy, but he's awful proud of his stuff. If you watch his site from time to time, you can find some reasonable things. Apparently not chisels!
