150214 Alan DuBoff <aland@S...> 2005‑09‑24 BIO: Galoot In Training
One of the members asked why he couldn't find my BIO, and if I was hiding,
and that's certainly not the case. As you will find out, I'm not shy.

I live in Silicon Valley, have a wonderful wife and two kids, my son is 13
and my daughter is 10.

I consider myself to be a Galoot In Training, although some of my tools have
tails. I do have and use quite a number of hand tools though. As many others,
I've seen a trend to use more and more tools that do not have tails, but I
don't have any intention to completely get rid of all my tailed tool (but who
knows...stranger things have happened;-), as some of the goals I have will
most likely involve *some*. Maybe you can consider me a Doberman Pincher,
with my tail cut short!

I have been involved in woodworking since high school, and after a long
haitus, returned with a goal to build a log home on a piece of property I
have in Northern California. If that interests you, you can read about it at:

I do not plan to do the logwork, but plan to have Tim Bullock do that for me,
an aquaintance who I've done web work for when I was out of work. The home
will be based on a somewhat famous design named Gideon's Cabin, which is
located in Maine, referred to by many as a "log cottage". The design is based
on a square with 4 gables, each containing a hip/valley between them. The
loft presents views to all 4 sides. The roof structure will be done with
timberframe, using round logs on the main floor. I plan to setup shop in the
basement, and complete the home after I can get it dried in. The dot-bomb era
somewhat put a damper on my dream...:-(

I have been in the high tech industry for about 25 years, and was an
independant consultant for most of that time. I've worked at many of the
large companies in Silicon Valley as a consultant. I now work for Sun
Microsystems. After being unemployed for almost 2 years, I'm grateful to have
a job which I can do which I like. If I can get my log home built, I can work
out of it, and cable modem is available today, which would allow me to work
there. I plan to continue putting my kids to school in Silicon Valley, and
the log home will be a second home, possibly retirement home at some point.

Since my dream was put on hold, I decided to build an office in my backyard
to develop my skills, and as a test to determine if I could complete the work
on a log home. It started life as a shed from "The Shed Shop" in Freemont,
and I'm completing it, actually going to be moving in this weekend as I just
finished the hardwood flooring earlier this evening, and have the baseboards
to complete tomorrow. You can see that at:

I lived in Japan for 5 years and *kind of* speak Japanese.;-) My wife is
Japanese, and my kids speak Japanese as their first language.

Oh, I'm also a Galoot Musician, and play upright bass. Music is also one of
my hobbies, and I was previously a professional musician before I moved to
Japan. I owned a vintage guitar store in Hollywood (early '80s) before that.

Some folks on the list know me, and I attended the BAG-A-THON this year. Some
also know me from WoodNet where I hang out. I rarely post to Saw Mill Creek,
but do *occasionally*.

That should be about enough info to make everyone puke...
