With apologies for the delay. I have been asked for the full text of the original material. Since it includes diagrams, I have also put this on my website. http://www.geocities.com/plybench/mortise.html Clamp the material on to the bench top in such a position that can easily be worked (Fig 1), and proceed to remove the waste as shown in figs 11 or 12. The first requires the drilling of one hole to finished depth at the far end of the mortise. This relieves the pressure on the chisel which can then get down to depth quickly and easily. The position of the bevel of the chisel should be carefully noted at the various stages of the operation. In the second method the waste is forced out towards the centre of the mortise working backwards to each shoulder line. The finished depth of the mortise should be marked on the chisel blade by affixing to it a small piece of sticky tape. Always chop the mortises before ploughing grooves otherwise valuable marking out lines will be lost. Also note that the groove can be as wide as, or narrower, than the mortise, but not wider, because the the haunch will not tbe big enough to fill it. When chopping the mortise care must be taken to ensure that the hole produced is parallel to the side of the material. The bench set-up show in Fig 1 helps to do this. BugBear | |||
