First,  this is a very interesting thread, thanks Eric for your
initiative and thanks Pete for your well put response. Now, from what I
read in  Todd's post he is not surmising about the steel, he is stating
that in Disston's 1907 hand book they say the same crucible steel is
used in all saws.  So it seems to lead to the theory  that what happens
to the steel in the next stages of manufacture and finish are what makes
the the differences in the various saws.
Todd,  how about some direct quotes from the Disston note book?
