By all means try to find a copy of Mike Abbott's "Green Woodwork" 
(Guild of Mastercraftsman, 1989).

Aside from plans for building a pole-lathe (which sounds likes
it's too late in your case) lots of other info on types of
wood, a (short-ish) chapter on simple lathe-projects, chair-making
etc.  A good big to have if you're sliding down this particular
slope.
