Ed's advice to Greg: > Greg, > > I think Stanley still makes the #80 and can provide you with > a blade and a > replacement screw (most likely at a reasonable price and SOT terms, > according to experiences others on the list have had). I got a replacement blade for my #80 from Lori at Stanley, but the thumbscrew is a different story. The #80 now comes with a screw with a head like a knurled cylinder (slotted for a screwdriver). It isn't long enough to push on the blade on my older #80. So apparently it is thumbscrew or nothing for us owners of US-made #80's. I asked Lori if there was any other Stanley screw that would be suitable for this application, and she couldn't think of any. The #80 works OK without the thumbscrew, but I'm sure it would work a lot better if I could bend the scraper blade with a thumbscrew. As the MofA points out on his Blood&Gore, the #81 (scraper with rosewood sole, Jeff) doesn't have the bending thumbscrew at all, and this tool was supposedly intended for the more finicky cabinetmakers. So until I find the right thumbscrew myself, I'm doing all my scraping with an unbent blade. Or my type 1 #112 with Hock scraper blade... Kelly Cox Madison, WI | |||
