73810 Chris & Kelly Otto <cdotto@e...> Jan-23-2000 Saw questions, & a galoot prospect

Galoots --

You've all convinced me that I need to acquire a few dozen saws. Right
now, I
only have one, a nice Atkins crosscut that Keith Bohn sold me shortly
before
he taught me how to bottom feed. And saws are pretty easy to come by in
the
local glassware-and-kitchen-gadget mauls, often in restorable condition
and
at fairly reasonable prices, so the first question is this: where do I
draw the line,
how do I decide what to take and what to leave? Assuming it's got a
decent
handle & nuts, is the typical "Warrented Superior" worth picking up, or
should
I stick with the name brands like Pete Taran suggests on his website?
Should
I automatically pick up anything with a nib as long as it's potentially
usable
(& not priced too high?)

I also sometimes run across old saws that have a wierd 'feel' to them.
Unlike
the typical saw which has a nice heft and feel, giving an impression of
stiffness
and quality, these others feel ... "tinny". Almost as if they were made
from
old cookie sheets. Almost an aluminum-like feel. So, am I being unneces-

sarily subjective, or has anyone else noticed this? If I'm not imagining

it, do ya think this indicates a potentially crappy tool?

I've found lots of useful information on Pete's and Ralph's websites,
which
I'll put to good use as I add to my saw assortment. Thanks for the info,

guys. And I swear I'm going to actually use every one of these tools I'm

acquiring....

The prospective galoot is my son Nathan, age 2 yrs 10 mo. He found my
Stanley 624 eggbeater drill and started cranking it, with this maniacal
expression of delight on his face. (I bet it's the same expression most
of us
get.) He looks at me and says "Old tools are for ME."

Regards,
Chris O.
...making plans to go back and get that nibbed Disston I walked away
from
today. One with nice wheat carvings on the handle. Only missing one
nut. Marked $15, and I think I might be able to talk her down...
