Y'know, the word "purfling" just makes me chuckle in a juvenile sort of way.
It sounds like something naughty or socially inappropriate that one might
do. Like "Stop purfling about back there!" Or "I think that guy next to me
at the head table was purfling all night long." Or even better yet "I
couldn't follow the sermon, what with that guy in front of me purfling
through the whole thing."

Reminds me of an old risque post card from the 1920's that I saw
somewhere... shows a guy and his young girlfriend sitting under a tree. He
asks her "Do you like Kipling?" She replies "I don't know, you naughty boy -
I've never kippled!"

Oh, and - by the way - it's for cutting narrow grooves in musical
instruments (e.g., guitars and such) for decorative inlay work.
