73752 FrankSronce <sroncef@f...> Jan-21-2000 Brace Question

Fellow galoots,

I need some brace help. I picked up a small ratchet brace today with
the following markings:

"4906" on one arm (frame piece); on another arm is "Made in <TEXTO> USA"
("< >" indicates an oval around the word TEXTO, and I am not positive
about the first T); on the opposite side of one of the arms is "W U
TELCO". Handle and head seem to be rosewood.

The two-jaw chuck doesn't seem to have any markings. The swing seems
to be about 7 inches. I thought the "06" in the "4906" might mean
that it had a 6 inch swing, but I can't seem to measure any way that
would give me quite that small a swing. Any ideas about the brace
and its maker?

This could be fun to guess. The first part is undoubtably Pexto. Peck,
Stow and Wilcox in the more modern world I believe.
  But this last part.........
Western Utah Telephone Co?
Waco United Telephone Co?
 Wabash Union?
  Waxahachie's Unusual?
   I dunno
   yours, Scott

Scott,

Ralph B. answered off line. He says Western Union Telegraph Company.

Frank: PEXTO is "short" for Peck, Stow & Wilcox of Southington CT
1870-1950.

Erv and others have settled the makers identity; I think the users mark is
"Western Union Telegraph Co."

Western Union Telegraph Co. -- none other. Forgot all about those old-
fashioned yellow-paper emails, didn't ya?
