73682 Jeff Youngstrom <jeffy@W...> Jan-19-2000 newbie waffling about #7

Greetings Galoots,

In cruising my local anteek maul I ran across a #7 (wimpy
jointer, Jeff). I'm just getting started in this hand tool
game so I don't own a jointer, but I'm not sure whether I
should get this one or not.

It says "No 7" on the toe. There's no raised ring around
the front knob, but the knob is tall. Sweetheart iron with
some life in it. No markings on the lever cap, straight
keyhole, no kidney. The sole looks okay except for a deep
scratch or two. I foolishly didn't look closely at the
mouth, but nothing jumped out at me.

The obvious problems I see are that the horn on the tote is
MIA, and the top of the frog is snapped off. It looks like
there was a lateral adjust lever there, but it's gone now.
The depth-adjust seemed okay.

So, asking price is $50. Am I insane for waffling or
should I run away faster? I'm only interested in it's
value as a user tool unless it's fabulously collectible and
somebody wants me to get it for them ;-)

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Jeff,

Definitely run away fast. A #7 with a broken frog and tote isn't a
$50 plane.

The overwhelming response was that a broken tote and a
broken frog do not a fifty dollar plane make.

Now I feel dumb for even asking (Pass me that spitoon, I've
got a rag around here somewhere. ;-), but I promise that
I've learned some things from all your thoughtful
responses.

Thanks for your help and patience,
