Pity you don't like the LN. I've got one and it is magic. So I suppose
all mitre planes will be magic too....  :-)

I think you're better off trying to get a Norris via a dealer rather than build
your own from a SJBTC casting.  Unless you have access to metal
working machinery. Then it is worth the effort. You might also try
some of the stuff our own Steve Knight is doing: I've seen some pics
that left me panting and drooling!

You might also consider getting a #5-1/2 or a #6, putting it on its side
and make a wood slide carrier for it. If you raise the surface that carries
the piece being worked on, you can get a similar result to a Stanley
mitre plane carrier ( I just forgot the # for this). Adapt an angled handle
and mitre away to your hearts content!
