68397 "Bob Rackers" <rackersr@o...> Sep-22-1999 Stanley #8; I. BLOOD Broadax

Had a bad day at the flea market today.

Wanted to get a decent pair of leather work gloves, but for the first time,
they were nowhere to be found.
Why does it always work out that way?

I did, however, find a Stanley #8 which is a bit odd if you believe Walter's
Stanley type guide.
The iron is of Type 2.
The body appears to be a Type 6. However, Walter says that the number is
cast with larger spacing, but this is closely spaced. I'm not sure whether
or not that note applies to the number 8.
The frog appears to be a Type 6, in all cases, except that Walter states
under Type 5 that the tope corners of the frog are no longer rounded. They
are clearly rounded on this one, yet that was supposedly changed 3 years
prior to the other Type 6 features this frog has (lateral adjustment with
circular disk, three patent dates, recessed adjustment knob with "Bailey's
Patent" inside and right-hand threads.
Remarkably good shape, with about 90 - 95% japanning remaining, and no rust
spots. Worst that could be said about it was that the tote was a little
loose.
A few vendors later and a borrowed screwdriver fixed that easily enough.
Hard to pass up at $30. Couldn't haggle in good conscience on that one.

On my way out I passed back by the same vendor. He had a large broadax head
still sitting on the table. It appears to be marked as follows:

I. BLOOD ???????? (Looks to say ENGLISH)
JALLSTON. N.Y. CAST STEEL

Anyone have any info on this maker?

I did get to haggle on the broadax head. Had to get it out of my system
before leaving.
Felt so much better.
Another $25 gone.

Alas, no leather gloves.
Mission not accomplished.
Guess I'll have to keep searching. (Sigh!)
I really hate days like that.
