Cowtown Eric played hooky from work today, and went tool shopping. Twas in an antique mall that i did find a big honkin backsaw. Marked on the back "disston and sons", but etched with "made expressly for the Goodell Mfg Co, which to my limited knowledge would put it before Goodel Pratt wouldn't it.?? It is in real good condition too. The blade is 28"lon, but the teeth are only for the middle 20" of that, there are two 4" untoothed ends to this saw. The teeth are distinctive in their filing, looking very much like japanese saw teeth too, but there is a slight hollowness to them, so I'm thinking that they were user filed. Can anyone shed any light on the purpose or intent of the un-toothed parts of this? Oh yea, thetool god was good today. A MF714, buckrodgers plane, a brace type flat screwdriver with a 5"sweep, a Sorby registered brace with a 8" sweep, and another non-ratcheting brace simply marked "CK" with an unusal bit holder, a big honkin Stanley electricians screwdriver, and another Robertson Screw co screwdriver of a previously unseen (by me) variation. The ck brace also needs an ID, but that's another venture. Cowtown Eric

I have sometimes wondered about the purpose of putting teeth on,
say, about 4" on the front and rear of a saw intended to be used in a miter
box, where those sections of the blade will never cut wood. Maybe we see
here the result of someone acting on the premise that teeth on the
extremities of a miter saw are not worth the bother (?).

I just finished sharpening the saw for mine, and as I was finishing up the very last tooth at the front of the saw I thought - "Man that was stupid..." Maybe next time I'll just file them off as a little reminder that they don't need to be particularly sharp... /Tad Truex
