Speaking of big honking planes:

There is a remembrance of Cecil Pierce in FWW Jun96. The author [Robert
Hottentot] writes of visting Pierce in his shop and helping him run a
"5-ft.-long by 4-in.-wide two-man wooden jointer plane." to smooth a 30
inch-wide mahogony board for a table top.

Reckon what ever became of that one...

[Warning: end-of-the-weekend pondering ahead.]

Also, looking at the photo Paul forwarded got me to wondering. No doubt
some of the miracle workers on the porch could rescue this plane, but
--given a "monster" plane that was beyond hope-- has anyone ever
experimented with "reincarnating" such a plane as several new planes? It
would be hard to beat this as a source for dry, stable wood of the right
species; one could probably get three or four nice, new smoothers out of
the plane above. And while some might consider this sacrilege, surely this
is no doubt better than turning it into a lamp or the "wondeful
conversation piece" the ebayist above suggests.

putting up strawberry-rhubard jam.
