63737 Derek Berwald <derek@p...> Jun-09-1999 FS: (prefer trade) G-P Push Drill

I have this Goodell-Pratt pushdrill that I can't use, and I'm
hoping somebody can. First, a warning: this pushdrill uses
those bits with the cross-shaped end. It would probably be a mistake
to buy this thinking "I'll just pick up some bits." DAMHIKT.

OK, the drill is in good shape, with the plating worn where it
would lie on the bench, and in a spiral pattern along the shaft.
Bits are held in the handle by a cap that turns, which is held
in place by a spring loaded-ball bearing. There is space for
eight bits in the individual compartments. The cap is held on by
a screw that sometimes loosens during use. I think a dab of
beeswax would solve that, but I never bothered. It has a strong
spring, but since is the only push-drill I've ever tried, I
don't know how it would compare to others.

Markings: At the top of the handle there are markings 0-8 to
indicate the places the bits go. Just below that, in a single
line that goes almost all the way around the handle, it says:

Goodell Brothers, Greenfield, Mass. Patented Nov. 17 1891

Where the handle turns into the shaft, it says:

Goodell-Pratt Company.
Greenfield, Mass. U.S.A. (there is a little discoloration here)

It comes with two bits, and the shaft of a third, that I recently broke,
thereby reducing the world supply of these bits by 0.05%.

I would like to trade this for a good user-grade four-fold rule. If
nobody is interested in that, I'll sell it for $12 + shipping, using
standard oldtools terms. If nobody is interested in that, maybe
somebody could sell me bits? I would like this thing to be put back
to work, if not in my garage, then someone elses.
