63607 "David Boreham" <davidb@i...> Jun-07-1999 Inclined Plane

Was reading one of the books last night (the one with the
irritating font). He says that if your smoother is properly
tuned, it should be possible to lay it on the board, pointing
along the grain, and raise up the end of the board such
that the plane drives itself along under the force of gravity
alone, taking a whispy shaving.

Anyone ever seen this happen ?

In another life, I had another friend who was also a plane maniac. He
was just as obsessive and a lot more intense than Plane-O-Man. George
went to the Krenov class, made lots of wooden planes and told me of the
most skilled of Japanese carpenters who removed the iron from their
plane and re-honed after each pass. George also told me of the inclined
board phenomenon.it seems to me that a plane set to cut would hook it's
cutting edge into the board and dig in. At least that's what they do
every time I put one on my desk. (I gotta refinish that desk someday)
